Monthly meeting of the DeKalb Animal Coalition will be June 1 at 6:30 p.m., second floor of city hall, all are invited to hear about the progress of the animal shelter.

At the DAC Benefit Place, located at 110 W. Walnut St. Smithville, open Friday 10 a.m to 4 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., we have a wood sign that is approximately 4 feet by 3 feet with the word FAITH on it, if there is any church that would like to have this sign for their use, come to the Benefit Place and we will happily give it to you.

There are many people who, with good intentions, try to rescue animals that they see are injured or misplaced. I thought it would be helpful to list phone numbers that you could contact if you do come across an animal that needs help.

Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency: 1-800-262-6704 for the Cumberland Plateau area 1-800-624-7406 for middle TN, or you can contact them on their Facebook page.

There is a poaching hotline, and a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of persons poaching wild life may be given. For the Cumberland Plateau area, the number is 1-800-241-0767: for middle TN, the number is 1-800-255-8972. The National Wild Turkey Federation offers a $300 reward also for information leading to the arrest and conviction of persons poaching wild turkeys.

The Animal Humane Society has a free Pet Helpline, 952-435-7738. They will give referrals for veterinarian care, low cost spay and neutering, end of life services, surrender alternatives, managing pet behavior and how to help stray animals. They will not give medical advice. Their hours are Monday-Friday 9 a.m. - 8 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. - 6 p.m., Sunday 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
