I hope everyone had a wonderful Mother’s Day. I enjoyed my day with my children and family.
I had a very busy weekend. My son Hayden Ervin graduated Saturday from Volunteer State Community College with honors, Summa Cum Laude. He now has his Associate of Applied Science in PTA. We are very proud of him.
The graduation was very interesting. There was a husband and wife graduating together who are raising six children with the youngest being 18 month old. Two sets of twins, a father and son, 28 from military veterans, and students representing 18 different countries.
I found two graduates very exceptional. One was a young man who came from high school with a 4.0 and graduated with a 4.0. He was honored as student of the year. They talked about his leadership and his sense of humor on campus. He has Cerebral Palsy, and things would take him twice as long as other students because he could not use a regular mouse, and used an electronic Head Mouse to type. When he received his award he received a standing ovation.
An award so well deserved.
The other student was an 86-year-old young man. He received an honorary degree in recognition of his dedication to the college, also as a major contributor to Vol State campus. It was the first time in college history that an honorary degree had been presented.
With all of this said I enjoyed a wonderful graduation.
Keep Lena Maynard’s family in your prayers.
Get-well wishes to JoAnn Pittman and Kimberly Violet.
Mark Violet attended the Poke Sallet Festival in Gainesboro over the weekend. Mark and friends Derrick and Rhonda Dobson set up booths and enjoyed the festival.
Just a reminder, the Smithville Review will be having their first Women’s Expo this coming Saturday, May 14 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the DeKalb Community Complex. Come out and enjoy the day with us. We have 36 different vendors coming, and door prizes every hour between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.
