Assault and drugs keep Deputies busy

Not only was the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department hard at work last week with Grand Jury indictments, deputies also made several arrests involving assaults and drug offenses.

Sheriff Patrick Ray told the Smithville Review that on July 14, 42-year-old Charles Markum Jr, of Lonnie Cantrell Road, Smithville, was arrested for aggravated assault. He is under a $15,000 bond and he is set to appear in court on August 3.

Authorities allege that Markum assaulted his uncle by striking him in the face and ribs causing lacerations, bruising, swelling, and a broken orbital bone. A deputy responded to Lonnie Cantrell Road on a report of a domestic assault. Contact was made with Markum and his uncle, as well as other witnesses of the altercation. Authorities allege that Markum was the primary aggressor and he was placed in custody.

On July 21, 24-year-old Gabriel James Hesson of Oak Drive, Smithville, was charged with assault for an incident that occurred earlier in the year. He is under a $5,000 bond and will appear in court on August 10.

Sheriff Ray said that on February 11, 2023, Hesson intentionally and knowingly assaulted another male in the Jail Annex by striking the inmate multiple times in the head and upper body area. Hesson also allegedly threw the inmate into a steel table, wall, and door in the Annex pod. The inmate was treated at the DeKalb ER for his injuries.

On July 25, 44-year-old Ricky Allen Ashford II of East Main Street, Liberty, was arrested for a violation of an order of protection. He is under a $2,500 bond and he is due in court on August 10.

A deputy went to a home on East Main Street in Liberty to attempt to serve an arrest warrant on a female. At the residence, the deputy made contact with Ashford inside the home where the protected party resides.

Central Dispatch confirmed that there was an active order of protection, with no amendments to the order. Ashford was placed under arrest.

The following day, 23-year-old Tatumn Breann Newman of Ashland City Highway, Nashville, was arrested for methamphetamine manufacture deliver sell or possess and driving on a revoked/suspended license. She is under a $22,500 total bond and she is set to be in court on August 10.

A deputy conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for not having a license plate. The deputy made contact with the driver, Newman, and upon running her name and date of birth through NCIC, it was revealed that she had a suspended license.

After removing her from the vehicle, and asking if there was anything illegal in the vehicle, she that there was dope underneath the drivers’ seat. Upon a search of the vehicle, a small baggy containing .67 grams of clear crystal-like substance believed to be meth was located under the seat.

A passenger in the vehicle, 54-year-old Theodore Aguayo of Holmes Creek Road, Smithville, was also arrested on the scene for methamphetamine manufacture deliver sell or possess. He is under a $50,000 bond and will be in court on August 10.

A black box containing a clear bag with a white crystal-like substance believed to be meth weighing 4.26 grams was located in the car as well as bags of needles. Also found on his person was a clear pipe believed to be used for smoking meth. Aguayo allegedly admitted that the box was his.

On July 27, 30-year-old Casey Eugene Brinkley of Mathis Lane, Woodbury, was charged with assault for hitting a man trying to enter the Gentleman’s Club. He is under a $2,500 bond and is set to appear in court on August 10

A deputy arrived on Sparta Highway and met with a male subject who advised that he had been assaulted by Brinkley when trying to enter the Gentleman’s Club to fix a drink machine. The man reported that Brinkley hits him a couple of times on the head. The deputy reported that the man was bleeding at the time he arrived.

Brinkley allegedly admitted punching the victim because he thought he was trying to enter the facility without paying, not knowing he was there to work on the drink machine. There was also camera footage of the incident.
