The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department stayed busy last week, making arrests for DUI, assault, and even a fugitive from justice.

Sheriff Patrick Ray told the Smithville Review that on November 1, 40-year-old Charles Allan Barnett of Shady Drive, Smithville, was arrested for aggravated assault. He is under a $3,500 bond and he is set to appear in court on November 17.

A deputy responded to Shady Drive in reference to a report of a domestic assault. Upon arrival the deputy made contact with a male subject who reported that he and his boyfriend, Barnett, had been in a verbal argument when it turned physical. The victim stated that Barnett had pushed him on the ground and started to kick him in his face.

The man also alleged that Barnett got on top of him, placed his hands on his throat, and tried to strangle him. When the victim indicated he could not breathe, Barnett then allegedly kicked the victim in the groin area, then left the residence.

The victim also stated that Barnett brandished a rubber mallet and said that he would kill him if the victim got up from the floor. Authorities say there were visible marks on the victim’s neck, face, and right side.

The following day, 32-year-old Jacob Randall Lawrence of Eagle Creek Road, Smithville, was arrested for public intoxication. He is under a $2,500 bond and is due in court on November 10.

Sheriff Ray said that a deputy was dispatched to a report of a suspicious person. On arrival, the deputy made contact with Lawrence, who authorities say was highly intoxicated and laying in the front yard of a stranger’s home with his pants and underwear down around his knees. He reportedly admitted to having several drinks earlier in the day.

That same day, 40-year-old Joshua Leslie Johnson of Hendrixson Road, Smithville, was arrested on a fugitive from justice warrant from the State of Georgia. He is under a $75,000 bond and he is due in court on November 17.

On November 4, 32-year-old David Martin Roberts of South College Street, McMinnville, was arrested for driving under the influence first offense. He is under a $1,500 bond and is due in court on December 1.

According to Sheriff Rau, a deputy was dispatched to Sparta Highway on the report of a wreck without injuries. Upon arrival, the deputy made contact with Roberts who advised that he had ran into a ditch. The man allegedly admitted to consuming seven beers earlier in the evening and he reportedly had a strong odor of alcohol coming from his person. Authorities say the man was unsteady on his feet, his eyes were glossy, and he had slurred speech.

Roberts submitted to field sobriety tasks, but performed poorly. He was also cited for driving on a suspended drivers’ license, having no insurance, and for an open container for a half gallon of alcohol in his front seat.
