There seemed to be a rash of domestic assaults last week, occupying much of the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department’s time. The assaults resulted in several arrests.
On July 14, 42-year-old Charles Markum Jr. of Lonnie Cantrell Road, Smithville, was arrested for aggravated assault. He is under a $15,000 bond and due in court on August 3.
According to Chief Deputy Brian Williams of the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department, Markum allegedly assaulted his uncle by striking him in the face and ribs, causing lacerations, bruising, swelling, and a broken bone.
Authorities say a deputy responded to Lonnie Cantrell Road on a report of a domestic assault. Upon arrival, contact was made with the alleged victim and witnesses, as well as Markum. He was determined to be the primary aggressor and was placed in custody.
On July 15, 18-year-old Brayden Ferrell of Short Mountain Highway, Smithville, and 36-year-old Jennifer Ferrell of South College Street, Smithville, were each arrested after a domestic assault incident. Both are charged with domestic assault, with Brayden under a $4,500 bond, while Jennifer is under a $2,500 bond. Both are set to appear in court on August 8.
Chief Williams said that a deputy responded to a home on Short Mountain Highway on a report of a domestic assault and made contact with Jennifer and Brayden. Authorities say that Jennifer was displaying abrasions and cuts to her leg as well as a possible broken wrist, while Brayden reportedly had blood and red marks on his chest area and on his arm.
A primary aggressor could not be determined due to the injuries by both parties so both were placed in custody.
On July 17, 34-year-old Maranda Smith of Avant Circle, found herself in more hot water after initially being charged with driving on a revoked or suspended license.
Chief Williams reported that a deputy conducted a traffic stop on a gray Dodge Caravan driven by Smith due to the deputy having prior knowledge of Smith not having a license. It was confirmed through Central Dispatch that her license was revoked and she was placed in custody.
She was later charged with introduction of contraband into a penal institution with a total bond of $17,500 bond. She is set to be in court on August 3.
As a correctional officer went to the sally port at the DeKalb Jail to get Smith from the deputy, she was asked if she had anything on her person. She allegedly advised that she had a pipe and other paraphernalia in her bra. Smith then reached inside her shirt and produced a card and an empty baggy with a white residue inside. She was told that if she had anything else on her she would be charged and Smith allegedly stated that the pipe must have fallen out.
Inside the jail, a search was conducted and a baggy containing a white powdery substance was discovered.
That same day, 44-year-old Rachel Spurlock of West Broad Street, Smithville, was arrested for methamphetamine manufacture, deliver, sell, or possess. She is under a $20,000 bond and will be in court on August 10.
A patrolling deputy made contact with Spurlock on Bright Hill Road. The deputy had prior knowledge of an active warrant out for the woman and placed her in custody.
A pat down search conducted at the DeKalb Jail resulted in the discovery of a small baggy containing a white crystal-like substance believed to be 1.15 grams of meth in her left-hand pocket of her shorts.
On July 18, 51-year-old Scott Rice of Bloomington Springs Road, Smithville, was charged with violation of bond conditions after a domestic assault call. He is under a $5,000 bond and he will appear in court on August 10.
A deputy was dispatched to Cedar Drive for a report of a domestic assault. Upon arrival, the deputy made contact with Rice and the alleged victim, who advised they had been involved in a verbal domestic. The woman reported that she called 911 and Rice took the phone from her and would not let her leave the residence.
After running Rice’s name through dispatch, it was learned that the man had bond conditions, which he allegedly violated during the incident.
On July 23, 33-year-old Zachary Fish of Neal Medely Road, McMinnville, was charged with resisting, stop, frisk, and halt. He is under a $3,500 bond and is set for a court appearance on August 10.
A deputy made contact with a male subject during a casual encounter. The deputy asked the man what his name was and the man replied, “Zachary Fish.”
Later, the deputy learned that Fish had an active warrant out of Warren County, and he made contact with the man again on Fisher Avenue. The deputy told Fish to stop and talk with him. The deputy asked the man his date of birth, but Fish refused and allegedly tried to flee on foot.
