Blast2 – Windows at a local business on Highway 70 were shattered after a blast wave tore through Liberty last week.

If you felt your teeth rattle and your house shake last week in the Liberty area, you weren’t alone. Routine blasting at a local rock quarry went terribly wrong last week, resulting in shattered windows, and even doors dislodged from the frames.

The incident occurred last Tuesday, October 3, in the area surrounding the quarry run by Rogers Group at 470 Woodbury Highway in Liberty. Blasting conducted by Austin Powder Shooting ended with what the State Fire Marshal’s Office describes as an over pressurization. The blast wave ripped through the area, breaking windows and shaking foundations of local homes and businesses. The blast exceeded the state allowable level of 140dB.

According to investigators, the damage was not caused by rock or debris, but rather the pressure wave of the explosion. A large plume of smoke was also reported coming from the quarry.
