Paislee’s Foundation 5th annual craft and home show will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Oct. 13 inside the Kenneth Sandlin Building at the DeKalb County Fairgrounds in Alexandria. Admission is free. Booths are available for $25. Proceeds go to Paislee’s Foundation to benefit families dealing with still birth and infant loss. Roadblocks on
Highway 96 Oct. 19

The Tennessee Highway Patrol will be conducting a Seat Belt checkpoint in DeKalb County Oct. 9 on State Highway 96. Recognizing that an alarmingly high number of vehicle occupants killed in fatal crashes were unrestrained, the Tennessee Highway Patrol has elected to create an enforcement campaign aimed at drastically reducing the number of unrestrained drivers and occupants. Troopers will also be on active patrol observing for unrestrained drivers and occupants of motor vehicles. The Tennessee Highway Patrol has found seat belt checkpoints to be an effective means of enforcing seat belt and child restraint laws of Tennessee while ensuring the protection of all motorists.

preservation workshop
MTSU Center for Historic Preservation will hold a workshop Oct. 20, focusing on the preservation of Smithville Town Cemetery. The free event will start at 9 a.m. in the community room on the second floor of city hall and discuss cemeteries of Tennessee and overall cemetery care. The afternoon work session will be held at Smithville Town Cemetery under the guidance of restoration experts from 1 to 3:30 p.m.

 Free Fall Funfest at
the Complex Oct. 20

DeKalb Community Complex will host its first FREE Fall Fest on October 20. Everything will be free and this event is geared towards kids and families! There will be games, cake walk, face painting, Kids arts and crafts, popcorn, live bluegrass music, line dancing class at 12:30 p.m., and much more. Complex Director Josh Melton says, “Our newest member to our team here at DCC, Ashley Medlin is heading this event up and she is excited to get the community involved!” The DeKalb Farmers market will also be extending its hours to be a part of the festive fun. The market will have pumpkin and fall venders here for your fall needs! Contact them to see about booth space! So far DeKalb Senior Citizens, DeKalb 4-H, Justin Potter Library, Smithville AG, and DeKalb Coalition are helping out. If you would like to help by setting up a game please call 615-597-2121.

Handbags for Hope Oct. 27
The fourth annual Handbags for Hope will be held Oct. 27 at 10:30 a.m. at Duck Pond Manor at 630 Duck Pond Road in Sparta. There will be a grab bag, purse auction and brunch. All proceeds go to domestic abuse prevention and awareness. Tickets are $30 apiece and are available through Everbrite.com (Genesis House).

Color Cruise on
Center Hill Oct. 27

The 16th Annual Fall Color Boat Cruise on Center Hill Lake, Silver Point, 1 to 4 p.m. This fundraising event is sponsored by the Friends of Edgar Evins State Park, an all-volunteer group with the sole purpose of supporting the park. sign ups begin at Complex

DeKalb Jr Pro Basketball signups will be held in the main lobby of the DeKalb County Community Center on October 2nd, 5th, 9th, 11th, 16th, 30th and November 1st from 6 pm to 8 pm.  The cost is $30 to be paid by cash or check at the time of signup.  We will NOT be having signups on the day of tryouts this year. We will NOT be accepting any late signups after Nov. 1. NO EXCEPTIONS.  

Festival of trees planned
at Complex

DeKalb’s Festival of Trees will be held at the County Complex with setup dates from 6 t 8 p.m., Dec. 2 and 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Dec. 3. Take down will be Jan. 2-5. Trees must be at least five feet tall. For full details about the contest call 615-318-2298.

Local Help Center Needs
Help From the Community

His Love Help Center has been providing free clothes, shoes, medical items and etc. for over three years to people in our community. They serve all walks of life, such as single parents, the elderly, fire victims, and more. At the current location (1100 S. College St.) the Help Center has to pay rent, phone, water, gas and electric.  In order to stay open and to continue serving our community it needs your help. If you feel you are able to provide financial help, have a building they can use or a one-time donation please stop by the help center or call 615-597-(love) 5683.

Al-Anon Meetings
The McMinnville Alanon group meets Tuesday and Thursday nights at 7 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church, 1024 Faulkner Springs Road in McMinnville. Smithville Head Start Center

L.B.J. & C. Head Start is currently accepting applications to provide free comprehensive child development services to children three- five years of age from low-income families in a full-day program. Services are also offered to meet the special needs of children with disabilities. L.B.J. & C. Head Start helps all children succeed. L.B.J. & C.
