DeKalb County School Calendar
The remainder of the 2020 school year is as follows: Schools will be closed for Good Friday, April 10. Spring break will be March 23 through March 27. Students will not attend on Wednesday, May 20. That will be an administrative day and all teachers must attend. The last day of school will be Thursday, May 21 and report cards will be sent home.
American Legion & Ladies Auxiliary meeting, March 19
The meeting will be held at the building at Snow Hill on March 19th at 6 p.m. A meal will be enjoyed before the meeting. Chicken tenders will be the main entrée. Anyone attending needs to bring a compatible dish and /or dessert. All members are welcome.

Free NARCAN Training
A free training on the use of the opioid reversal drug NARCAN (Naloxone HCL) will be Wednesday, March 18 at 6 p.m. at the Laurel Hill Baptist Church, 7551 Sparta Highway. Located approximately 1.4 miles east of Sligo Bridge on the left side of the road setting on the hill in DeKalb County. Participants will receive knowledge on when and how to use the drug NARCAN; an opioid overdose reversal kit, which contains 2 units of NARCAN nasal spray; gloves; quick reference guide with pictures on how to administer the drug NARCAN; and a medication lock box. This training is free to anyone who would like to attend. The event is sponsored by the Tennessee Department of Mental Health & Substance Abuse Services.

Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held on Thursday, March 19 at DeKalb County High School from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.

Girl Talk, March 12 &19
Your daughter is changing daily from a girl to a young woman. You can equip your daughter with the knowledge she needs for her journey into womanhood, by attending a program called Girl Talk, which is designed for mothers and daughter in 4th-9th grades. Girl Talk is an educational program designed to enhance communications between moms and their daughters about changing bodies, behavior, and beliefs. This program is instructed by April Martin, DeKalb County UT Extension agent, Elise Driver, Coordinated School Health and Megan Kinslow, DeKalb County Health Educator. The following Thursdays: March 5, 12, and 19 at 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the DeKalb County Community Complex. No cost to attend. Participants must attend all 3 sessions. Space is limited. Overcomers Support Group Speaker Meeting will be held on March 22, 2020 at 5 p.m. at Elizabeth Chapel Baptist Church, 1850 Allen Ferry Road, Smithville, TN 37166. Grand Jury to Meet, March 30
The next term of the DeKalb County Grand Jury will meet on Monday, March 30th. “It is the duty of your grand jurors to investigate any public offense which they know or have reason to believe has been committed and which is triable or indictable in the county. Any person having knowledge or proof that an offense has committed may apply to testify before the grand jury subject to the provisions of Tennessee Code Annotated 40-12-105. The foreman in this county is presently Ms. Katherine Pack, 1 Public Square, Room 201, Smithville, Tennessee, 37166. The grand jury will next meet on Monday, the 30th day of March at 9:00 a.m. You may be prosecuted for perjury for any oral or written statement which you make under oath to the grand jury, when you know the statement to be false, and when the statement touches on a matter material to the point of question.
Father-Daughter Dance for Habitat for Humanity
Fathers and daughters of all ages will be making memories and helping support Habitat for Humanity during the first ever Father-Daughter Dance for this cause. Tickets are on sale now at all banks in Smithville for the event to be held Saturday, April 4 from 6- 9 p.m. at the DeKalb County Complex. Spokesperson Holly Moore said the dance is a way to honor fathers and encourage strong father-daughter relationships while raising funds for a great cause. “It’s not about how well you dance but about fathers and daughters making memories and having fun together. You can come dressed all decked out or casual,” said spokesperson Holly Moore. “The cost is $20 per person and its open to all ages and if you are in a situation where your father has passed away or is not available, you may attend with another male relative such as an uncle or grandfather. In addition to dancing the event will include a dinner, one professional photo, a chocolate fountain, a fun photo booth, and you will get a cute gift bag.
DeKalb’s Community Conversation meeting, April 2
Vanderbilt is participating with DeKalb County Schools to improve the outcomes of students with disabilities that are graduating from local high schools. Quilt Show, April 17 & 18
The Stitch and Share Quilt Guild of Sparta, Tennessee will be hosting their biennial quilt show on April 17 and 18, 2020 at the Agriculture Building at the White County Fair Grounds in Sparta, Tennessee. SNAP being offered to seniors and those with disability
Upper Cumberland Area Agency on Aging and Disability (UCAAAD) is now offering application assistance with “SNAP”, formerly known as the Food Stamp Program for adults 60 and over or individuals with a disability. The USDA created SNAP to provide eligible individuals with monthly benefits to buy food. .
Over $1 million in food stamps are not being utilized in DeKalb County and a total of over $19 million not being used by the 60 and older population in the 14 counties within the Upper Cumberland region, including Cannon, Clay, Cumberland, DeKalb, Fentress, Jackson, Macon, Overton, Pickett, Putnam, Smith, Van Buren, Warren, White counties. If you know someone 60 and over or an individual with a disability, they may qualify for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
Applicants 60 and over or an individual with a disability can now call UCAAAD SNAP Coordinator, Nestor Chavez, at 931-476-4119 for free and confidential application assistance.
Local Help Center Needs Help From the Community
His Love Help Center has been providing free clothes, shoes, medical items and etc. for over three years to people in our community. They serve all walks of life, such as single parents, the elderly, fire victims, and more. At the current location (1100 S. College St.) the Help Center has to pay rent, phone, water, gas and electric. In order to stay open and to continue serving our community it needs your help.
