The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department made several arrests last week with domestic assaults and DUIs taking the bulk of deputies’ time. But, one arrest for a sealed indictment landed another charge for a Smithville man after he was in the jail.
Sheriff Patrick Ray told the Smithville Review that 44-year-old Jermaine Derperise McCoy of Smith Road, Smithville, was arrested on July 20, on a sealed indictment for methamphetamine manufacture deliver sale or possess. He was booked into the jail and was under a $50,000 bond on the charge.
Later, McCoy was also charged with bringing contraband into a penal institution when he was found to be in possession of approximately 10 grams of a white powdery substance believed to be cocaine. Authorities say he attempted to conceal the contraband, but later surrendered it to law enforcement. He was given an additional $25,000 bond on that charge.
He appeared in court on the meth charge on August 2, and is due in court on September 30 for the other charge.
Sheriff Ray said that 25-year-old Katie Leigh Mooneyham categorized as homeless from Smithville, was also arrested on July 20 on a sealed indictment for meth charges. She is under a $50,000 bond.
On July 22, 63-year-old Marty Paul Neal of Tabernacle Road, Smithville, was charged with driving under the influence, aggravated assault, and possession of a handgun under the influence of alcohol or drugs. He is under a $24,500 bond and appeared in court on August 5.
According to Sheriff Ray, a deputy was dispatched to Tabernacle Road on a call of an unwanted guest, armed with a gun and threatening the caller. While authorities were in route, the suspect left the scene on a motorcycle.
Contact was made with Neal on Short Mountain Highway, and he was found to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol. After a search, a Taurus 9 mm handgun was found in Neal’s right pocket. Neal stated that there had been a physical altercation at the residence. The victim told authorities that Neal drew and pointed the handgun at them. Neal admitted to having the weapon during the altercation, as well as drinking alcohol. He was given a field sobriety test, which he performed poorly on.
On July 28, 26-year-old Matthew Adam Cubbins of Aaron Webb Road, Smithville, was charged with domestic assault and forgery.
Authorities say that on June 30, 2021, Cubbins assaulted a female by cornering her in the bathroom, grabbing her arms and refusing to leave.
When deputies arrived at the scene Cubbins passed a document as being an official medical document from Cheer Mental Health. Cheer Mental Health was contacted and stated that it was not their document.
He is under a $11,000 bond and appeared in court on August 5.
On July 29, 31-year-old Cameron Renee Page of Pine Orchard Road, Smithville, was charged with driving under the influence. He is under a $1,500 bond and due in court on August 12.
Sheriff Ray said that a deputy responded to call concerning a reckless driver who had struck a trashcan and a small tree in the City of Smithville. The deputy made contact with Page on Bright Hill Road. Authorities say that Page’s eyes were glossy and his speech was slurred. He submitted to a field sobriety task, which he performed poorly.
On July 31, 44-year-old Byron Ray Wilson of Walker Lane, Shelbyville, TN, was arrested for public intoxication. He is under a $1,500 bond and set to appear in court on August 19.
Authorities say that a deputy was dispatched to the area of Big Hurricane Road in reference to a suspicious male subject walking a bicycle in the middle of the roadway, stumbling around.
Upon arrival, the deputy made contact with Wilson, who was unsteady on his feet and had incoherent speech. Wilson refused EMS and advised he had taken what he thought was a Suboxone a few days prior. For his safety, and the safety of others, Wilson was arrested and transported to the DeKalb County Jail.
On August 1, 37-year-old Curtis Armstrong Fox of Walker Creek Road, Alexandria, was charged with domestic assault. His bond is set at $3,500 and he is due in court on August 26.
Sheriff Ray said that a deputy responded to Walker Creek Road and made contact with a female and Fox. The female allegedly had blood on her clothing and face, and there were knots and bruising to her facial area.
Fox had scratches on his arms that appeared to be defensive wounds from the altercation. Both parties had been consuming alcohol prior to the altercation. Authorities say that Fox assaulted his girlfriend by striking her in the face multiple times. He was arrested and taken to the DeKalb County Jail.
