A young lady from Warren County lost her life Friday in a horrific three-vehicle crash that may have been caused by a medical condition. Keley Roller, 22, was killed on Highway 70 in Liberty around 3:50 p.m.
That impact caused her car to lose control and she entered the path of a red pickup driven by Jerry Dutton of Dowelltown. The pickup driven by Dutton was directly behind the truck that was side-swiped.
The front of the Dutton truck made hard contact with the side of Roller’s car, creating significant damage. Bell and Dutton were both uninjured, the Highway Patrol reports. However Jenelle Pugh, a passenger in the Bell vehicle was transported to Nashville with broken bones in her back.
As for what caused Roller to leave her lane of travel, state trooper T.J. Withers speculates it could have been a medical condition.
“We’re still trying to investigate that aspect of it, but we know she was an insulin-dependent diabetic,” said trooper Withers. “My thinking is that did play a role in the crash, but I can’t say for sure.”
Withers said Roller was wearing a seatbelt.
Roller had already overcome one great obstacle in her young life. She was just 15 when she was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia, an uncommon type of cancer of the blood cells.
She was on a Florida beach in 2013 when sudden symptoms led to her diagnosis.
“We were sitting on the beach when she started to feel really bad,” said Keley’s mother, Yvonnda, in a story published in the Southern Standard. “The next day, she could hardly get out of bed so I took her to the emergency room. That’s when we found out.”
Roller was able to defeat the disease thanks to a bone marrow transplant.
