Fire consumed on a single story home Wednesday afternoon in the Coconut Ridge area. The structure was a complete loss.
The home, belonging to Thomas Starkey of Nashville, was occupied by his brother William Starky and family. Marvin Gesford, the father-in-law, was home at the time of the blaze. He saw flames on the deck, and tried to put it out with a pitcher of water. However, the flames only got bigger.
He exited the home and went to a neighbor’s house to call 911, but no one was home. A passerby called dispatch to report the fire.
While fighting the blaze, two fire fighters had to be treated and transported to St. Thomas DeKalb Hospital for heat exhaustion.
Four Seasons station, the Main Station, the Cookeville Highway Station, the tanker truck, the equipment truck, the brush truck, and the rehab team, the TN Division of Forestry, DeKalb EMS, and DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department responded.
The cause of the fires is still unknown.
An account has been set up at First Bank in Smithville for anyone who would like to donate to the Starkey family.
