A Friday night blaze ripped through a Smithville home, leaving local firefighters battling not only the fire, but also the heat and humidity. Officials say that though the house suffered extensive fire, smoke, and heat damage, no injuries were reported.

According to Smithville Fire Chief Charlie Parker, at 11:40 p.m. E-911 dispatchers were notified about the blaze from a passerby, who reported smoke coming from a house on West Webb Street, just off the Square in Smithville. The house, belonging to Mitch Hodge, was under renovation and was unoccupied at the time.

Units with the Smithville Fire Department, officers with the Smithville Police Department, and DeKalb EMS responded to the scene. A crew from Smithville Electric also responded to cut power to the house.

Chief Parker said that it looks as if the blaze began in a front room on the first floor of the home, but by the time fire crews arrived it had spread to the second floor and attic. When firefighters first arrived at the scene, flames were coming out of the windows of the home.

Firefighters worked to contain the blaze, keeping it from spreading to other areas. The house and all of its contents is thought to be a total loss. Authorities say the cause of the fire is under investigation.
