Local firefighters didn’t have much time off for Christmas after a house caught fire early Sunday morning. Fire crews were able to contain the blaze to just one room, but the home and its belongings suffered significant smoke damage.
According to DeKalb Fire Chief Donny Green, E-911 dispatchers received a call reporting the blaze at 6528 Antioch Road 12:59 a.m. Belk Engine 66, Keltonburg 64, Short Mountain Engine 62, and Main Station Engine 59 with the DeKalb Fire Department responded to the scene, along with a unit with DeKalb EMS, and deputies with the DeKalb Sheriff’s Department.
Authorities say that the house was the rental property of Tony Cantrell, and the renter, Jennifer Pack, was at home at the time of the incident. Pack, her children, and other occupants were able to evacuate the home without injuries.
The fire reportedly started in the living room by an unattended candle. The candle apparently fell in the floor and ignited the room. Firefighters were able to contain the fire and keep it from spreading to other parts of the home, though the rest of the house suffered heavy smoke damage.
The Red Cross later arrived at the scene to help assist the family with their needs.
