The Thanksgiving holiday saw no rest for local firefighters. Fire crews responded to two different wildland fires in different parts of the DeKalb County over Thanksgiving week.
Dry and windy conditions are continuing to make wildfires a threat in the area.
The DeKalb County Fire Department’s Wildland Task Force joined the Tennessee Division of Forestry last week, first battling a wildfire off Adamson Branch Road Tuesday night into Wednesday, then responding to another wildfire on Thanksgiving Day in the area of Indian Creek and Fuson Hollow, on the shores of Center Hill Lake.
Shortly after 2 p.m. on Thanksgiving, crews were dispatched to the Indian Creek area where they discovered approximately 50 acres of steep forestland burning out of control.
The fire is believed to have originated near the Indian Creek boat ramp. No structures were damaged or immediately threatened.
The Tennessee Division of Forestry was able to contain the fire using fire lines, while the DeKalb County Fire Department used its fire boat to extinguish fires near the shoreline.
The Smithville-DeKalb County Rescue Squad was also on the scene to provide boat transport for the forestry crews. No injuries were reported.
