A DeKalb County inmate faces more charges after he yelled racist slurs at an African-American deputy and then threatened to kill his family.
The inmate, Nathaniel Dylan Tippens, 26, of Smithville is charged with assault and disorderly conduct, the new charges coming after his trip across the street from jail to the courthouse this past week.
According to sheriff’s department reports, Tippens began to show himself shortly after being seated in the jury area of the courtroom where inmates are generally seated during court proceedings. The prisoner reportedly put his feet up on the bar in front of the jury area and was told to put his feet down. When he refused to obey orders, he was ordered back to jail.
Tippens chose not to go peacefully as he went dead-legged on the officers, forcing them to drag him from the courtroom as those there for court watched. He did manage to kick the courtroom door on the way out, all in full view of the court gallery. He then turned his ire toward one of the deputies, calling him the “N-word” before proceeding to say he would kill the lawman’s kids and wife and burn down his home.
Tippens was in court for resisting arrest after officers had to chase him down to serve an active warrant on him in Liberty.
