The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department made several arrests last week, including an arrest in an investigation over a Cash App fraud.

Sheriff Patrick Ray told the Smithville Review that on December 5, 37-year-old Mark Anthony Murry of Dunbar Road, Crossville, TN, was arrested on two counts of theft of property. He is under an $8,000 bond and is due in court on December 29.

On September 12, and September 24, 2022, Murry transferred money from a Cash App account to his Cash App account with the intent to deprive the owner of their money. Murry did not have consent to make the transactions, which totaled $1,156 on the first date and $2,900 in the second offense.

That same day, 43-year-old Jessie Comer Harris of Possum Hollow Road, Dowelltown, was arrested for aggravated assault. He is under a $10,000 bond and he is due in court on December 29.

A deputy responded to Possum Hollow Road on a report of a male subject outside with a knife. The deputy spoke with a witness who stated that Harris had threatened him while holding the knife. The witness reported that Harris was yelling and screaming while holding the knife, placing the witness in fear for his life.

On December 7, 29-year-old Destry Jordan Wiggins of Evins Mill Road, Smithville, was charged with driving under the influence first offense and no insurance. He is under a $2,500 bond and he is due in court on December 29.

A deputy responded to the area of Vaughn Lane in reference to a vehicle accident. The deputy made contact with the driver, Wiggins, who was allegedly unsteady on his feet and had slurred speech. Wiggins reportedly admitted to consuming alcohol and submitted to field sobriety tasks, of which he performed poorly.

On December 9, 41-year-old Eddy Deloyd Farris of Hodges Road, Smithville, was arrested for methamphetamine manufacture, sell, deliver, or possession, and driving on a revoked or suspended driver’s license. He is under a $32,500 bond and is set to appear in court on December 22.

A deputy conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle doing a burnout at the intersection of Evins Mill Road and East Broad Street in Smithville. Earlier, that same deputy had written Farris a citation for driving on a suspended driver’s license.

After the arrest, upon arrival at the DeKalb County Jail, a bag of a crystal-like substance believed to contain meth, weighing .74 grams, was found on Farris’ person.

The following day, 37-year-old Joshua Lynn McCowan of Andrews Street, Smithville, was arrested for possession of a schedule I drug heroin for sale of delivery and driving on a revoked or suspended driver’s license. He is under a $52,500 bond and he is due in court on December 22.

A deputy conducted a traffic stop on a black Pontiac Vibe for having a tag that belonged to a different vehicle. The deputy made contact with McCowan and located inside the vehicle was a glass tube with a powdery substance believed to be heroin, weighing 2.74 grams. McCowan reportedly admitted that it was heroin inside the tube.

After running the man’s name through dispatch, it was learned that McCowan’s license had been suspended. He was also cited for having the wrong license plate, no insurance, simple possession of a schedule VI drug marijuana, and drug paraphernalia. Inside the vehicle, the deputy reported finding several meth pipes with residue, needles, a spoon, scales, and 3.47 grams of a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana.

On December 11, 57-year-old Howard Lee Pyles of Antioch Road, Smithville, was arrested for having no driver’s license. He is under a $2,500 bond and he is set for court on January 5.

A deputy reportedly observed Pyles driving on Nashville Highway, knowing that the man did not have a valid driver’s license. The deputy performed a traffic stop and it was confirmed that Pyles did not have a license.  He had been cited for the same offense on December 5, 2022.
