Ken Lacy had his salary doubled a couple of weeks ago by the city after they learned he had been doing the work of two. Now, he has had his pay nearly doubled again, meaning within a month he went from making $12,000 a year to making $40,000 annually.
The vote to raise Lacy’s pay came last week during a special-called meeting in which alderman Gayla Hendrix said the increase is needed because Lacy will be responsible for overseeing the golf course, swimming pool and tennis courts at the city’s recreational facility. She said as far as overseeing the recreational facility, Lacy is the most qualified of all those who have applied.
Lacy had been hired on last year along with Pete Ferguson to oversee the golf course. However, Ferguson resigned over the summer, leaving Lacy to do it all. When the board of mayor and aldermen found out, they gave Lacy Ferguson’s half of the pay, upping him to $24,000 a year.
Alderman Brandon Cox was the sole dissenter in the 4-1 vote to give Lacy the second raise. Cox, who just joined the board this past month, said he has looked at the numbers during the first year of the city running the golf course and feels by giving such a big raise, the city won’t even break even.
