Local law enforcement found themselves in a standoff in Dowelltown last Wednesday afternoon (April 13), after a routine patrol ran across a man with a gunshot wound.
According to DeKalb County Sheriff Patrick Ray, at 6:31 pm, a deputy on routine patrol in Dowelltown, was flagged down on West Main Street due to a man being shot. Officers placed the wounded victim in a patrol vehicle and took him to a safe location on Highway 70, where he was met by Emergency Medical Services.
Other officers arrived on scene and set up a perimeter around the residence where the shooter had barricaded himself inside. With weapons drawn, law enforcement took cover behind trees and patrol vehicles while they attempted to negotiate with the man. After a short period of time, Sheriff Department Detectives were able to get the man to surrender and walk out of the residence, where he was taken into custody without further incident.
Through an investigation into the shooting, it was determined the suspect, 55-year-old Lorenzo Hernandez of West Main Street, Dowelltown, had shot another male in the arm after a disagreement with the victim at a residence in Dowelltown. The victim’s injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening.
An investigator with the District Attorney General’s Office was summoned to the scene to assist in the investigation. Alexandria Police Department and Constable Mark Milam also responded to the scene to assist the Sheriff’s Department.
Hernandez was charged with aggravated assault. The warrant reads that on 04-13-22 Lorenzo Hernandez did knowingly shoot someone with the intent to cause serious bodily injury. The total amount on the bond is $25,000 and the court date is April 28.
The name of the victim was not released.
