















The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department released their latest crime news, delayed for a couple of weeks due to Sheriff Patrick Ray being out of town. Deputies made many arrests, including one man for breaking into a number of vehicles.
Sheriff Ray said that 53-year-old Burnette Bernie Jones of East Broad Street, Smithville, was arrested on October 2, for theft of property over $1,000, and four burglary charges.
According to Sheriff Ray, Jones was observed on surveillance camera entering a 2004 black Nissan Maxima, a 2008 black Chrysler Sebring, a 2014 black Chevy Silverado, and a 2003 red Chevy Tahoe, parked at Gill’s Automotive with the intent to deprive the owner of their belongings.
He was also recorded entering and driving a 2012 Bobcat T750 in the back lot of Gill’s Automotive, and was also seen trying to strap down a Caterpillar bucket to the Bobcat, with a total value of both items at $54,000.
Jones is under a $130,000 bond and is due to appear in court on November 15.
Other arrests include 48-year-old Ginger Elaine Moore of Cookeville Highway, Smithville, who was arrested on September 28, for violation of an order of protection. She is under an $8,000 bond and she is due in court on November 10.
Sheriff Ray said that a deputy responded to Cookeville Highway on a report of an unwanted guest. Upon arrival the deputy made contact with Moore, and a check through NCIC revealed the woman was the respondent in an active no contact order of protection, with the petitioner of the order residing at the address on Cookeville Highway.
On September 30, 42-year-old Abigail Bogle of South College Street, Dowelltown, was arrested for public intoxication. She was under a $500 bond with her court date on October 13.
A deputy observed a female walking on West Broad Street, Smithville, unsteady on her feet and staggering off and onto the sidewalk, nearly being hit by a vehicle. The deputy made contact with Bogle at the Discount Tobacco outlet on West Broad Street, and authorities say she had a strong odor of alcohol coming from her person. She was arrested due to her being a danger to herself and others.
On October 5, 40-year-old Tommy Jerome Bates of Foster Road, Smithville, was charged with evading arrest and public intoxication. He is under a $4,500 bond and is set to appear in court on October 27.
Sheriff Ray said that a deputy made contact with Bates, walking in the middle of the road on West Broad Street, near Anthony Avenue. He had a 25 ounce Natty Daddy in his hand.
The deputy attempted to place Bates in custody due to him being a danger to himself and others, but the man took off running on foot. While in foot pursuit, the deputy deployed his Taser, hitting Bates with the prongs. He was then taken into custody.
On October 9, 29-year-old Marco Antonio Granados-Mendez of Cecil Hale Road, Smithville, was arrested for domestic assault. He is under a $3,500 bond and he is due in court on October 27.
A deputy responded to Cecil Hale Road on a report of a domestic disturbance between a boyfriend and girlfriend. Allegedly, Granados-Mendez and a female had been in an argument when he went outside, kicked the front door in, came into the kitchen of the home and wouldn’t let the female leave. Authorities say that he put the female and her two children in imminent fear of bodily harm.
On October 12, 64-year-old Duane Lee Watson of James Place, Smithville, was charged with driving under the influence, second offense. He is under a $3,000 bond and is due in court on November 3.
A deputy responded to Lakeview Drive on a report of a motor vehicle accident on private property and made contact with a silver Chevy pickup in a field. The driver, Watson, was allegedly unsteady on his feet and had a strong odor of alcohol. Authorities say the man was unable to complete any field sobriety tasks. Watson reportedly told the deputy that he had consumed alcohol and was too drunk to drive. The man also had some alcoholic beverages and open containers in the vehicle.
Two days later, 40-year-old Joshua Leslie Johnson of Hendrixson Road, Smithville, was arrested for unlawful possession of a weapon. He is under a $25,000 bond and is set for court on October 27.
A deputy stopped a silver Dodge Avenger and after making contact with the driver, Johnson, he was given permission to search the vehicle. Deputies discovered a Lorcin L25 25 caliber handgun, with an inserted magazine containing five rounds of ammunition under the driver’s seat. Deputies also located in the driver’s door a box of 25 caliber ammunition containing 10 rounds.
It was revealed that Johnson had three felony convictions, with one being a violent charge of reckless endangerment involving a deadly weapon on July 11, 2016 out of White County, TN. He was also cited for drug paraphernalia, driving on roadways lane for travel, and driving on a revoked license.
That same day, 56-year-old Paul Green Cantrell of Old Blue Springs, Smithville, was arrested for methamphetamine manufacture sell deliver or possess, simple possession of a schedule III drug, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He is under a $10,000 bond and will appear in court on October 27.
A deputy was dispatched to Shiny Rock Market on a welfare check on a male subject asleep in a minivan parked in the store’s parking lot. Upon arrival, the deputy made contact with Cantrell who was asleep in the driver’s seat. The deputy asked Cantrell to step out of the vehicle due to drug paraphernalia being in plain view in the vehicle. The deputy then located to clear baggies containing a crystal-like substance believed to be meth on his person in a cigarette pack. The total weight of the substance was 2.49 grams. Also found was a glass pipe with a white residue and four and a quarter peach-colored pills believed to be Suboxone.
Also on October 14, 31-year-old Meghan Denise Asnes of Rochester Drive, Murfreesboro, was charged with aggravated criminal trespass and vandalism over $1,000. She is under an $8,000 bond, and will be in court on October 27.
Sheriff Ray said that a deputy was dispatched to Corp of Engineers property at Resource Drive on a call of a break-in. Upon arrival the deputy made contact with the Corp of Engineers who reported that a window door had been broken and that someone had been inside the residence. The damage to the residence was greater than $1,000.
While investigating, it was learned that a female subject was given a ride from the area earlier that morning prior to the deputy’s arrival. The deputy located the woman, Asnes, at the boat ramp near the dam and it was learned that she was on video at the location of the break-in.
