Crash



Two people avoided serious injury last week after a two-vehicle crash left a man trapped in his vehicle.

According to Smithville Police, on Tuesday, February 8, at 5:43 p.m., 56-year-old Jeanne Dickson of McMinnville was traveling east on Highway 70 (West Broad Street) in a 2005 Hyundai. At the same time, 71-year-old Roger Summers of Smithville was traveling west in a 2003 Chevy Traverse.

Police say that Summers as attempted to turn into a gas station he pulled into the path of Dickson’s vehicle. The Hyundai hit the Traverse, flipping the Traverse onto its side.

The Smithville Fire Department, Smithville Police, and DeKalb EMS responded to the scene. Fire crews had to cut through Summer’s windshield in order to remove the mane safely from the vehicle.

Summers was cited for failure to yield. No serious injuries were reported.

The following day, authorities had to work another crash, this time with the College Street Bridge once again as the victim.

According to Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper Bobby Johnson, 48-year-old Timmy Ford of Otto Warner Road, Crossville, was traveling east on West Broad Street in a 2014 Peterbilt and a trailer loaded with crushed vehicles and scrap metal. As the truck passed under the College Street Bridge overpass, part of the load struck the bottom of the bridge. The bridge height is 13 feet and 10 inches.

Ford was cited for over height limits on his trailer. No injuries were reported.
