The DeKalb County Sheriffs Department aided the Tennessee Department of Corrections last week in a routine search that resulted in a local man facing numerous charges.
Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Brian Williams reported that on October 8, 41-year-old Thomas Jacob Sims of Lakeside Drive, Smithville, was arrested for possession of a weapon, possession of drug paraphernalia, meth manufacture deliver sell or possess, resisting arrest, evading arrest, and simple possession of a schedule VI drug marijuana. He is under a $53,500 bond and will appear in court on October 24.
A deputy assisted officers with the Tennessee Department of Corrections at a home on Snow Hill Road for a probation search on Sims. When deputies stepped out of their vehicles, Sims allegedly starting running away. Deputies announced themselves several times, but the man refused to stop. When he was stopped, he allegedly refused to show his hands or obey commands to lay on his stomach. After a lengthy foot pursuit, he was eventually cuffed and placed in custody.
Located inside Sims’ bedroom was nine .22 long rifle bullets, two 380 ACP bullets, and two 9mm Luger bullets. Sims is on parole out of Georgia and is a convicted felon on a conviction of aggravated burglary in DeKalb County in 2010, and is not allowed to be in possession of any firearms or ammunition.
Also found during the search, in a shed behind the house, were scales, several needles, glass pipes and baggies, a baggy containing a crystal-like substance believed to be meth weighing 13.4 grams, and a bag containing a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana weighing 1.5 grams. In Sims’ bedroom were other glass pipes with crystal-like residue.
Also on October 8, 42-year-old Brandon Eugene Brown of Browntown Road, Sparta, was arrested for driving on a revoked or suspended license. He is under a $2,500 bond and is due in court on October 24.
Chief Deputy Williams said that a deputy conducted a traffic stop on a black Chevy Blazer due to the deputy having prior knowledge that the driver, Brown, had a suspended drivers’ license. A radio check confirmed the license had been suspended. He had been given a citation less than 12 hours prior for the same charge.
That same day, 55-year-old Billy Lee Stewart of Hodges Road, Smithville, was charged with driving under the influence. He is under a $2,000 bond and is due in court on October 24.
A deputy was traveling south on Short Mountain Highway, when he observed a red Ford Ranger leave its lane of travel multiple times. A traffic stop was performed at D&D Market, where Stewart was found to have a strong odor of alcohol coming from his person. He allegedly admitted to consuming several alcoholic beverages prior to driving.
The man reportedly had red watery eyes and was unsteady on his feet. He was asked to perform standardized field sobriety tasks, but while attempting to stand on one leg, he told the deputy he no longer wanted to participate. He was then placed in custody. Two open containers of alcohol, and five unopened containers were found inside his vehicle.
On October 12, 23-year-old Christopher Edward Spoon, Jr., of Sparta Highway, Smithville, was arrested for meth manufacture deliver sell or possess, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He is under a $10,000 bond and will be in court on October 24.
According to Chief Deputy Williams, a deputy conducted a traffic stop on a red Chevy Impala. During a search of the vehicle due to the driver and the passenger, Spoon, being on state probation, a pink polka-dotted bag and a black case were found under Spoon’s seat. Inside, a scale with residue, five straws with residue, four spoons with residue, two containers with residue, and multiple clear baggies with some containing a crystal-like residue, were found. Two clear baggies containing a crystal-like substance believed to be meth were found weighing 6.36 grams and .17 grams.
On October 13, 46-year-old Martinez Isaias Miguel of Short Mountain Highway, Smithville, was arrested for DUI, reckless endangerment, and driving on a revoked license. He is under a $11,500 bond and will be in court on October 31.
A deputy was traveling on Banks Pisgah Road when he observed a Buick leave its lane of travel several times, almost sideswiping the patrol vehicle. At a traffic stop at D&D Market Miguel was found to have a strong odor of alcohol coming from his person. He was asked to step out of his vehicle, and upon doing so he was allegedly unsteady on his feet and had red watery eyes.
He submitted to field sobriety tasks, and admitted to consuming two or three alcoholic beverages located in the vehicle. The man’s license also came back as revoked for a previous DUI in DeKalb County.
