A McMinnville man was killed Wednesday while a Smithville woman was critically injured in a head-on crash just over the Cannon County line Wednesday afternoon.

The man, Freddie Eldridge, 35, died at the scene while Melissa Stringer, 51, of Smithville was airlifted to Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

The accident happened at 3:20 p.m. about one mile inside Cannon County on Highway 146. According to the highway patrol investigation, Eldridge was heading southbound in his 2013 Honda Civic when he crossed the center-line while rounding a curve. His vehicle entered in the oncoming, northbound lane and struck Stringer’s 2012 Jeep Cherokee head-on.

Stringer was rushed to Stones River Hospital and airlifted to Vanderbilt from the facility.
