There will be some new faces on the DeKalb School Board and for a new judge position following last week’s primary election. Megan Moore won the DeKalb County Republican nomination for the Board of Education for District 5, while Judge Shawn C. Fry was unopposed for the newly created Criminal Court Judge position in Part III of the seven-county 13th Judicial District.
In the school board election, Moore defeated Tom Walkup 191 votes (58.95%) to 133 votes (41.05%). Moore carried both precincts that make up the 5th district, County Complex and Johnson Chapel. She also had the most early votes/absentees.
In the August DeKalb County General Election Moore will be unopposed, and succeed current board member Jamie Cripps, who did not seek re-election. The term is for four years.
Votes by precinct are as follows:
· Early Voting/Absentees: Moore – 5/66; Walkup - 1/58
· County Complex: Moore - 68; Walkup - 49
· Johnson Chapel: Moore - 52; Walkup - 25
In the 6th District, incumbent member Jason Miller won the GOP nomination for re-election unopposed with a total of 287 complimentary votes. He received three absentee, 74 early, and 210 election day. He will be unopposed in the August DeKalb County General Election.
The constable race for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 7th districts were all unopposed in the DeKalb Republican Primary Tuesday and will be unopposed in the August general election. The terms are four years. No candidate qualified in the 6th district.
The nominees in each district and their complimentary vote totals are as follows:
· 1st District: Tyler Cripps - 272 votes
· 2nd District: Danny Adamson - 302 votes
· 3rd District: Incumbent Travis Bryant - 298 votes
· 4th District: Incumbent Lane Ball - 308 votes
· 5th District: Incumbent Mark Milam - 335 votes
· 7th District: Jeremy Neal - 176 votes
Judge Shawn C. Fry received a total of 1,637 votes in DeKalb and was unopposed for the newly created Criminal Court Judge position in Part III of the seven-county 13th Judicial District. Fry was appointed to the judgeship last year by Governor Bill Lee. He will be unopposed in the DeKalb County General Election.
In the 2024 Presidential Preference Primary, Donald Trump received a total of 2,242 or 85.47 percent of votes to 312 for Nikki Haley in the GOP, while Democratic President Joe Biden, received 185 votes in DeKalb County. There were 23 or 10.9 percent uncommitted votes in the Democratic primary.
The DeKalb County Election Commission is now preparing for another primary and elections, the Tennessee Democratic and Republican Primaries as well as the Alexandria, Dowelltown, and Smithville Municipal Elections all to be held on Thursday, August 1, 2024. Persons may now pick up qualifying petitions from the DeKalb County Election Commission to run.
In the State Primaries on August 1, nominees in both the Republican and Democratic Parties will be selected for the offices of US Senate, US House of Representatives (6th District), Tennessee House of Representatives (40th District), and Tennessee Senate (16th District).
Those positions are currently held by US Senator Marsha Blackburn (R), Congressman John Rose (R) - US House of Representatives (6th District), State Representative Michael Hale (R) - Tennessee House of Representatives (40th District), and State Senator Janice Bowling (R) - Tennessee Senate (16th District).
In the Smithville Municipal Election August 1, three aldermen will be elected, each to serve a four-year term. The positions are currently held by Aldermen Shawn Jacobs, Danny Washer, and Jessica Higgins.
The Alexandria Municipal Election on August 1 will be held to fill the positions of mayor (unexpired term), three aldermen, and three other aldermen (unexpired terms).
In the Dowelltown Municipal Election on August 1, a mayor and two aldermen will be elected.
The qualifying deadline for the August 1 elections is Thursday April 4 at 12 noon and the withdrawal deadline is Thursday, April 11 at 12 noon. The voter registration deadline for the August 1 elections is Tuesday, July 2. Early Voting for the August 1 elections is Friday, July 12 to Saturday, July 27. The absentee ballot request time period is from May 3 to July 25 for the August 1 elections.
The DeKalb County General Election will be August 1 in which party nominees selected in the March 5 primaries will be running for the offices of Assessor of Property, Board of Education (Districts 5 & 6), Constable (Districts 1-7), and Criminal Court Judge- Part III in the 13th Judicial District.
The offices of County Commission District 6 and District 7 will also be on the August 1, 2024 ballot to fill unexpired terms. This election will be held in conjunction with the 2024 DeKalb County General Election. Independents may now pick up petitions. County parties may certify candidates for these two county commission district races through the caucus process by the qualifying deadline 12 NOON April 4, 2024.
