Veterans Service Officer Ready To Assist

Are you a veteran in need of assistance? DeKalb County has a Veteran’s Service Officer ready to help you., not only with filing claims, but for conversations about your service. Officer Erica Degni is located on the first floor of the DeKalb County Courthouse and is ready to offer assistance. She is available for in-office visits each Tuesday and Thursday or can be reached by calling 615-597-3003. DeKalb County appreciates the service of all veterans and is proud to provide this service.

 

Walling-Randals Cemetery

Walling-Randals Cemetery, Eaton Rd., Sparta, TN 38583. Decedents of: James Walling, Phoebe Jones Walling. Interest has renewed in the cemetery by the descendants and in the process of locating more relatives. We are in the process of cleaning the graves and would like to build a small pavilion shelter. Carmel Center Mass Services

The Carmel Center for Spirituality, Liberty, is now celebrating Catholic Mass each weekday at 8 a.m. and Sundays at 9 a.m. The Center is located at 610 Bluff Road, for more information contact Father James Panackal, director, 615-536-5177.

Empower Upper Cumberland offers FREE grant-funded program for low- to middle-income families with children

Want more for your family? Empower Upper Cumberland is a FREE grant-funded program for low- to middle-income families with children ages 0-17 years in the home.

If you receive Free or Reduced Lunch at school, are receiving SNAP or TennCare, or make less than 225% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines then you may be eligible for this program.

Empower UC is enrolling families continuously and has funding to help working families get more out of life to become more prosperous. Some ways we might empower families are:

Help with finding & keeping employment (or higher paying employment), transportation to/from work, support services, healthcare costs, finding childcare or helping with costs, higher education, financial counseling, credit recovery and much more. DeKalb Schools Art Exhibit May 18

The DeKalb County Schools Art Exhibit will be Saturday, May 18 featuring works of local art students. The annual event, sponsored by the Smithville Study Club, will be held from 1-3 p.m. at the DeKalb County Complex at 712 South Congress Boulevard. The public is invited to attend.

“The Art Exhibit features art from any student from five years of age and older in our county including home schooled students. Two students will be chosen to receive the “People’s Choice” and “Best of Show” awards,” said Art Chair Susan Hinton.

Bank Cemetery Decoration Week-end

The annual decoration at Bank’s Cemetery in DeKalb County will be held May 31, June 1, and June 2, 2024. Please plan to attend. Your support is needed to keep the cemetery properly maintained and kept looking nice. 44th Annual Older Americans Day Celebration

The month of May is recognized nationally as Older Americans Month, a time when we acknowledge the vast contributions older adults make to their families, communities and the
nation.

Justin Potter Library is partnering with the Alexandria and Smithville Senior Centers in hosting the Older Americans Day Celebration. The event will be held in the theatre area of the Mike Foster Multi-Purpose Center located at 712 S Congress Boulevard on Wednesday, May 15th.

The vendor displays will be located in the gym area from 9:00 AM until 10:30 AM with drawings for door prizes and entertainment to follow.

This year’s theme is “Powered by Connection”. The featured entertainment will be the classic rock band “61 Seconds”. We want to thank the local businesses and organizations for providing the door prizes, items for the goody bags and sack lunches for the older Americans to enjoy.

DeKalb County School Calendar for 2023-24

The school calendar is set for the 2023-24 year.

The last day of school will be May 21, 2024. May 20 will be an abbreviated day.

Report cards will be issued at all schools on May 21.

VBS “Stellar”

This VBS will be held at Smithville First Free Will Baptist Church, 500 Bright Hill Rd, Smithville, TN. Join us on May 26-May 30 from 6pm to 8pm. This will be a week of learning, food and fun! Register early on Facebook.
