Sunday will now be free swim day for kids at Smithville City Pool.
The decision to cut out fees for patrons 17 and under was passed by the city board of mayor and aldermen with Mayor Josh Miller telling the board that a larger than normal turn out this season would financially allow the city to provide free admission for non-adults
“The swimming pool and golf course have really been doing well this year,” Miller revealed before the vote. “A lot of people have been turning out. I spoke with Jeania Cawthorn, the manager of the pool, about maybe allowing kids to swim free on Sundays. That would be for ages 17 and younger. She agreed with that and I think that would turn more people out and be something extra for the kids.”
The mayor pointed out that Sunday is generally the least attended day at the pool since it is open just four hours that day, from 1 to 5 p.m. Youth admission is normally $2 per day.
Alderman Donnie Crook said he thought the city should examine going to totally free admission on all days for those 17 and under. The board had already talked about such a policy but put it on the back burner as it was feared a completely free pool for kids would bring masses that the current staff could not handle.
Presently, the pool is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. until school starts back.
