A police chase ended with spike strips being used and a local man facing several serious charges. The man faces drug, evading and theft charges after an arrest.

DeKalb County Sheriff Patrick Ray told the Smithville Review that on February 2, 55-year-old William Andrew “Andy” Cantrell of Redmon Road, Smithville was arrested for driving on a revoked or suspended license, resisting arrest, theft of property, reckless endangerment, and evading arrest. He is due to appear in court on February 22, and is under a $32,500 bond.

A deputy attempted a traffic stop on a white Ford Explorer driven by Cantrell on Sparta Highway, which was reportedly driving recklessly. The truck sped away and a pursuit followed. Officials say the pursuit reached speeds in excess of 100 mph, passing multiple vehicles on the wrong side of the roadway, almost causing multiple accidents.

Cantrell’s vehicle came to a stop in White County after White County deputies used spike strips to disable the truck. Cantrell then got out of the vehicle and fled on foot. He was soon apprehended.

After running Cantrell’s license through dispatch, it was confirmed to be revoked. After running the truck’s VIN number, it was confirmed to be stolen out of Michigan.

On January 30, 50-year-old Jeffery Glynn Sanders of Highland Street, Smithville, was arrested for possession of a schedule I controlled substance for sale, delivery, or manufacture, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He is under a $20,000 bond and is due in court on February 15.

A sheriff’s deputy assisted a Smithville City officer and after making contact with Sanders, consent was given for a search and 1.40 grams of a white powdery substance was found. Sanders allegedly stated that the substance was heroin. Seven hypodermic needles, a spoon, and two straws with a white powdery residue were also found.

On February 3, 45-year-old Corey Glenn Dunham of Allen Ferry Road, Smithville, was arrested for DUI first offense. He is under a $2,500 bond and he is expected in court on February 22.

A deputy was traveling east on Sparta Highway when he observed a gray Kia Soul leave its lane of travel multiple times. The deputy conducted a traffic stop at Fiddlers’ Campground on Sparta Highway. Authorities say that Dunham had slurred speech, glossy eyes, and strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his person.

The deputy asked Dunham to step out of the vehicle and perform field sobriety tasks. He submitted to but allegedly performed poorly on the tasks.

That same day, 35-year-old Rolando Epitacio Juares of Volunteer Drive, Nashville, TN, was arrested for public intoxication. He is under a $1,500 bond and he is due in court on February 22.

A deputy was dispatched to Sparta Highway on a report of two suspicious males passed out in a vehicle in the roadway. While in route, dispatch reported that one of the men took off running on foot.

On the scene, the deputy made contact with Juares stumbling down the side of the highway. Authorities say the man had a strong odor of alcohol coming from his person, glossy eyes, and was unsteady on his feet. He reportedly admitted to consuming four beers earlier in the night.

On February 4, 58-year-old Jimmy Lee Marr of Old Bildad Road, Smithville, was arrested for possession of a controlled substance for sale, delivery, or manufacture, and for having no driver’s license. He is under a $6,000 bond, and is set to appear in court on February 22.

A deputy conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for having a taillight out, and for having prior knowledge that the registered owner did not have a valid license.

The deputy made contact with Marr and after a check through NCIC confirmed that Marr did not have a license. Authorities say a strong odor of marijuana was coming from the vehicle, and after consent was given for a search the deputy located 57.3 grams of a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana.
