A Putnam County man was critically injured over the weekend after being involved in a late-night motorcycle crash in Smithville. The initial call to 911 reported a possible fatality, as the victim of the crash was found by a passerby, still laying in the roadway.

According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, on Saturday evening, around 11:35 P.M., 57-year-old Scott T. Smith of Baxter, TN, was traveling east on State Route 83 (Allen Ferry Road), near the vicinity of the Herb Cottage, on a 2018 Harley Davidson motorcycle. Authorities say that the motorcycle traveled off the right side of the roadway, and upon re-entering, the motorcycle went out of control and began to slide. The bike then slid across both lanes of Allen Ferry Road and came to rest in the westbound ditch line facing south.

Another motorist, on their way to work, drove up on the scene and reported the crash to 911. THP officials say that Smith was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, but the man received serious injuries. He was transported to Saint Thomas DeKalb Hospital by DeKalb EMS, then flown to Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville, where he is in in critical but stable condition.

Authorities say no charges are pending in the accident.
