Smithville Police Make Several Arrests

Smithville Police have had a busy few weeks, making several arrests mainly for public intoxication, including several behind the wheel of running vehicles.

On April 14, 24-year-old Courtney Brooke Shrum of Altamont was arrested for shoplifting and criminal trespass. Shrum was observed and stopped for concealing items belonging to Wal-Mart with the intent of not paying for the merchandise. She had been trespassed from Wal-Mart on February 21, 2023. She is under a $7,500 bond.

On April 18, 47-year-old Amanda Kay Roberts of Alexandria was arrested for DUI. Police were dispatched to Wal-Mart for a call of a possible DUI, when the officer made contact with Roberts, who was in the driver’s seat of her vehicle.

Authorities say that Roberts did have slowed speech and heavy eyes making the officer believe she was on a controlled substance. Roberts did submit to field sobriety tasks to which she performed poorly. Roberts was taken into custody and did consent to a blood draw. She was under a $1,500 bond.

That same day, 56-year-old Johnifer Norman Ferrell of Dowelltown was arrested for manufacture, delivery, sell or possession of methamphetamine, possession of firearm during commission of a felony, simple possession, unlawful drug paraphernalia, and public intoxication.

Police received a call concerning a gentleman acting strange in a vehicle, being jumpy and getting in and out of his vehicle as if he was on something. Once on scene, the officer made contact with Ferrell and reported smelling marijuana coming from the vehicle.

Ferrell was reportedly reaching around in the car while the officer was trying to speak with him and when the officer requested him to step out of the car, he refused and started to roll the windows up. The officer reached in and unlocked the door and requested him to step out of the car again, at which time he locked all the doors and windows and exited the vehicle. He was asked for his ID and he informed the officer it was in the car and he wasn’t opening the doors.

Ferrell was placed in cuffs and put in the patrol car, and was informed that his vehicle would be searched due to the smell of marijuana. Upon a search, 2.2 grams of marijuana, .7 grams of methamphetamine, four needles, a glass pipe, and a Taurus 45 was located inside. He is under a $56,000 bond and was in  court on May 4.

On April 26, 49-year-old John Allen Judkins Jr of Anthony Ave was arrested for DUI. Police responded to a call of two people yelling inside a truck in the middle of the road. On arrival, the Officer made contact with both individuals passed out in the Ford Ranger in the middle of the intersection. The Officer noticed the driver, found to be Judkins, passed out with his foot on the gas pedal and brake with the truck in gear.

The Officer put the truck in park and woke both parties, at which time, Judkins tensed up and put the gas pedal to the floor revving the motor to a high rpm. Judkins allegedly had slurred speech and was sweating in 55 degree temperature.

When asked to exit the vehicle, he was reportedly unsteady on his feet and informed the officer that he couldn’t do field sobriety tasks, but consented to a blood draw. He was under a $2,500 bond and was in court on May 4.

On April 29, 22-year-old Jonquil Raynard Robinson of Lebanon was arrested for domestic assault. Police responded a residence on Gentry Avenue concerning a possible domestic assault. Upon investigation, it was discovered that Robinson and the victim had gotten into an argument over his phone and he allegedly hit her on the left side of the face, near her eye, with the phone in question causing a laceration that drew blood. The victim also has scratch marks across the right side of her neck. He was under a $3,500 bond and was in court on May 11.

On April 30, 40-year-old Jessica French Hale of Jennings Lane was cited for criminal trespass. Hale was on Mapco property and had been trespassed from the property on March 8.

On May 2, 19-year-old Harley Lynn Wheeler of Lincoln Street was arrested for driving on revoked and cited for financial responsibility. Police observed Wheeler driving a black Corvette pulling out of Wal-Mart, and due to the officer having prior knowledge of Wheeler’s license being revoked, he was taken into custody. He was also cited for not having insurance. He was under a $2,500 bond and appeared in court on May 18.

On May 4, police responded to City Walk Apartments in regards to an unconscious female behind the wheel of a vehicle that had made contact with the apartment building. On arrival, the officer observed the female, identified as 47-year-old Amanda Kay Roberts of Alexandria, behind the wheel of the vehicle unconscious with the vehicle running.

The officer woke Roberts and asked her to step out of the vehicle and perform field sobriety test, to which she agreed to do and performed poorly. Roberts was read the implied consent and did agree to submit to a blood alcohol test. Roberts was taken into custody for DUI under a $3,500 bond. She was in court on May 18.

The following day, 32-year-old Christopher Scott Odom of South College Street was arrested for DUI. Police were dispatched to the DeKalb County Complex in reference to a man passed out in a running vehicle. On arrival, Odom was found asleep in the driver’s seat of a white SUV. The SUV was idling and there were many empty alcoholic beverage containers inside.

Odom consented to field sobriety tasks, to which he performed poorly. Odom reportedly smelled of an alcoholic beverage, was unsteady on his feet, and had slurred speech. Odom was in physical control of the vehicle in a public parking lot. He is under a $2,500 and is due in court on May 25.

On May 8, 56-year-old Marty Brent Tallent of West Broad Street was arrested for public intoxication and resisting stop, frisk, halt, and arrest. Police responded to a fight in progress involving Tallent. Upon arrival, Tallent took off running from the area when he observed the arrival of police cars. Tallent was advised to stop but refused and continued running and then apprehended by police.

Upon further investigation, police say that Tallent had a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on his person and breathe. Multiple empty Corona beer bottles were found in the area where Tallent was sitting on the side of the road and drinking in public. Tallent was trying to fight the owner of Glenn’s Auto, but contact was never made. Tallent was taken into custody for his and the public’s safety. He is under a $6,500 and will be in court on May 25.

On May 9, 28-year-old Dustin Allen Sullivan of Parsley Road was arrested for aggravated assault, vandalism, public intoxication, and resist stop, frisk, halt, arrest or search. Police responded to the area of Cooper Street for an unwanted guest. On arrival, officers made contact with Sullivan who was acting erratic, belligerent, carrying a big stick and appeared to be under the influence of narcotics.

Sullivan was placed under arrest for his and the public’s safety. While walking him to the patrol car for transport, Sullivan was pulling away from officers and grabbed the duty weapon in an attempt to disarm the officer and had to be forced into the patrol car. The officer did deploy his Taser after Sullivan grabbed his duty weapon. While in the back of the patrol car, Sullivan did kick the driver’s side back window until it shattered causing damage to the patrol car. He is under a $28,500 bond and was in court on May 18.
