DeKalb Sheriff’s deputies had a busy week, making one arrest for criminal impersonation while investigating a possible drowning.

DeKalb County Sheriff Patrick Ray told The Smithville Review that 38-year-old Dustin Joseph Roberts of Old Smithville Highway, Silver Point, was arrested on April 6, for criminal impersonation. He is under a $4,500 bond and he is due in court on April 14.

A deputy responded to Johnsons Chapel Road on an incident call concerning a drowning when Roberts walked up to the patrol car and stated that he was with the fire department and on the rescue squad as well. The deputy asked if he was with the DeKalb County Fire Department, and Roberts responded that he was not, but with the Coffee County Fire Department. The deputy verified with DeKalb and Cannon County Fire that Roberts was not a current member of either department.

The following day, 19-year-old Marshall Cody Hullett of Four Seasons Road, Smithville, was arrested on for driving while impaired. He is under a $1,500 bond and will be in court on June 30.

A deputy was patrolling Sparta Highway when he made contact with a red Pontiac that failed to use its turn signal. Upon conducting a traffic stop, the deputy spoke with the driver, Hullett, who allegedly had a strong odor of alcohol coming from his person. Authorities also say that Hullett’s speech was slurred.

Hullett allegedly admitted to consuming four or five shots of liquor earlier in the evening. He submitted to field sobriety tests, which he performed poorly.

Also that day, 41-year-old Jason Michael Hull of Shepard Road, Jamestown, TN, was arrested for a violation of an order of protection. He is under a $7,500 bond and he is due in court on April 21.

A deputy responded to the Cookeville Highway area on a report of a possible rolling domestic near Hurricane Bridge. While in route, the deputy made contact with a vehicle matching the description of the one given by the caller, and it appeared that the occupants were arguing.

The deputy stopped the vehicle, and a driver’s license check revealed bond conditions against Hull and the other person in the vehicle from Sevier County, TN.

On April 9, 43-year-old David Wayne Gaines of Snow Hill Road, Dowelltown, was arrested for evading arrest. He is under a $3,500 bond and he is due in court on April 28.

A deputy went to West Main Street in Smithville in an attempt to locate Gains for a failure to appear and hold without bond warrant. Upon arrival, the deputy noticed a male subject standing in front of a shed, who turned out to be Gains.

Gains took off running through a field, south towards West Broad. The deputy yelled for the man to stop several times, but he did not comply. The deputy later located Gains hiding behind a bush beside a residence on West Broad Street, Smithville.

On April 10, 37-year-old Vilot Mae Tucker of Antioch Road, Smithville, was arrested for domestic assault. She is under a $3,500 bond and will appear in court on April 28.

Authorities say that Tucker assaulted her husband by striking him in the face. A deputy responded to a call of domestic assault and made contact with the victim, who stated that his wife had become very irate during an argument and began striking him and throwing objects. There were marks on the man’s face and witnesses to the incident, who provided written statements to law enforcement.
