Jehovah’s Witness Launch Invitation, March 2024
During March 2024 Jehovah’s Witnesses will be launching a special campaign to invite fellow residents of DeKalb County to two special events. On Sunday March 24, millions of Jehovah’s Witnesses around the world will gather to commemorate the death of Jesus Christ, an observance Jesus himself instituted in the Gospels. Before the Memorial, a special talk titled “The Resurrection-Victory Over Death! Will be delivered at local Kingdom Halls on the weekend of March 16 and 17, 2024.
Exercise Class for 50 and older
Are you 50 or older and want to increase your strength, flexibility and balance? Th UT/TSU Extension Office in DeKalb County will be holding free light weight strength training classes for 8 weeks on Monday and Wednesday. Level 1 for beginners in light weight will be from 9-10am. Intermediate and advanced LL will be April 1st from 11-12. Classes will be at the County Complex Building. April Martin with the UT/TSU Extension office will be the instructor. Space is limited. FCE Meetings
The FCE will be meeting the 2nd Tuesday of each month. The meeting will be held at 10 a.m. at the DeKalb County Complex in the Motlow Conference room. Everyone is invited to attend.

Easter Mass Celebration At Carmel Center in Liberty
The Carmel Center in Liberty invites area Catholics, Christians, and well-wishers to a celebration of Holy Mass and the Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday, March 31, at 9 a.m. Father James Panackal, center director, will be presiding. Situated on 235 acres of scenic rolling hills at 610 Bluff Road just outside Liberty, in DeKalb County, The Carmel Center of Spirituality is a sanctuary for peaceful reflection and healing open to people of all faiths. Throughout the year the center hosts spiritual retreats, prayer services and seminars focused on what it means to be a Catholic and Christian in today’s world.
Mass will be held in the Center’s St. Chavara Hall. The grounds also include a Rectory, Eucharistic Chapel, the Grotto of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, and open-air Stations of the Cross for walking and contemplation. Two modern “hermitage” cabins for overnight guests are tucked away in the woods on the property.
The Carmel Center of Spirituality is owned and operated by The Carmelites of Mary Immaculate, a religious order founded in India by St. Chavara in 1831.

Retired military service officer Bill Rutherford is located on the first floor of the DeKalb County Courthouse and is ready to offer assistance. He is available for in-office visits each Tuesday and Thursday or can be reached by telephone at any time at 615-560-3610. Smithville Lions Club, April 6
The Smithville Lions Club Annual Pancake Breakfast and Silent Auction will be held on April 6 at the DeKalb County Community Complex from 7am to 10am. Menu includes pancakes, freshly grilled sausage or bacon, eggs, fruit and orange juice, milk and coffee. Cost is $10 for adults and $6 for children under 6. Tickets can be purchased before event from Dr. Starla Meigs, and Vester Parsley or at the door. A silent Auction will have some great items for Mother’s Day. All proceeds will be used to help citizens in DeKalb County.
Banks Cemetery Meeting, April 6
The annual meeting for Banks Cemetery in DeKalb County will be held on Saturday, April 6, 2024 at 4 p.m. at Banks Cumberland Presbyterian Church. All parties interested in the cemetery are invited and encourage to attend.
Commodity Distribution, April 25
The Upper Cumberland Human Resources Agency (UCHRFA) will hold a commodities distribution for DeKalb County on Thursday, April 25 from 9am to 11am at the DeKalb County UCHRA office. Sign-up will be available at the distribution site. The Upper Cumberland Human Resources Agency does not discriminate on the basis of age, race, sec, color, national origin, religion, or disability in admission to, access to, or operation of its programs, services, or activities. This project is funded under a Grant contract with the State of Tennessee.
DeKalb County School Calendar for 2023-24
The school calendar is set for the 2023-24 year.
Schools will also have a spring break March 25-29, closed for Labor Day September 4, President’s Day February 19, and Monday, April 1. The last day of school will be May 21, 2024. May 20 will be an abbreviated day.
Report cards will be issued at all schools on January 9, March 13, and May 21.
Parent teacher conferences will be held at DCHS from 3-6 p.m. on March 19 and at all the other schools, DWS, NES, SES, and DMS from 3-6 p.m. on October 12 and March 21.
