Smithville man arrested for domestic violence
Chancey

The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department had a fairly light week, making only a couple of arrests, one of a man who had been arrested the previous week.

Sheriff Patrick Ray told the Smithville Review that a 47-year-old Smithville man was once again arrested by the Sheriff’s Department after several more altercations with the man’s wife. Michael Lance Chancey of Sparta Highway was placed in custody on June 12, and charged with violating a no-contact order by the court.

On May 31, Chancey was arrested for domestic assault, after authorities responded to a domestic call. There, deputies observed a female with apparent injuries to her forehead and leg. The female reported that her husband, Chancey, had assaulted her by smacking her and throwing her against a wall, because she had told him that he had had enough to drink and that she would not buy him anymore alcohol.

In that case, authorities say that Chancey was uncooperative when asked about argument by the deputy. He was placed into custody without any further incident.

Sheriff Ray reported that on June 12, a deputy responded to the residence again on a domestic call. When they arrived they found that Chancey had already left. The deputy spoke with a neighbor, who stated that he had overheard the Chancey’s arguing the evening of Friday, June 11.

Only a few minutes after the deputies left the scene, they received yet another call, this time reporting that Chancey had busted through the door of the home. When deputies arrived, they found Chancey at the home, and as a result of an investigation, deputies allege that Chancey violated the no-contact order by causing multiple disturbances at the residence and by forcing his way inside, putting the female victim in fear for her safety.

Chancey was placed into custody and is under a $5,000 bond. He is due to appear in court on July 1.

The following day, a sheriff’s deputy made a DUI arrest after finding a wrecked vehicle.

Sheriff Ray said that 47-year-old David Edward George of Bell Street, Smithville, is charged with DUI and is under a $1,500 bond.

Authorities say that a deputy was patrolling Cookeville Highway when he noticed a white Kia Forte wrecked on the side of the roadway. Upon approaching the vehicle, the deputy made contact with George, who was allegedly unsteady on his feet and appeared to be intoxicated. Authorities also say that the man had a strong smell of alcohol coming from his person.

George allegedly also told the deputy that before he drove, he had consumed multiple alcoholic drinks and had smoked marijuana. He submitted to a field sobriety test, which authorities say he performed poorly. He is due in court on June 1.
