The Smithville Police Department has had a busy few weeks, making several arrests including those for DUI, assault and vandalism.
According to Police Chief Mark Collins, Jonathan Wann, 34, of Smithville was arrested for trespassing and vandalism on Aug. 17, 2024.
Officers responded to a disturbance. Upon arrival, officers found Wann beating on the front door of his neighbor’s house. Officers talked to the home owner and he advised he did not want Wann back on his property. Wann left the property.
A short time later officers responded back to find, Wann beating the same resident’s door with a wooden stick. The door was left damaged. He was placed into custody. His bond was set to $4,000, and he is set to appear in court Sept. 5, 2024.
Sergio Benitez, 42, was arrested for DUI on Aug. 18, 2024. He was also cited for driving on roadways laned for travel.
Chief Collins reports that an officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for failure to maintain lane of travel. As the officer was speaking with the driver, Benitez, he noticed a strong odor of alcohol. Benitez said he had just consumed a couple of alcoholic beverages. He was given and performed poorly on field sobriety task. He was placed in custody. His bond was set at $2,000, and he is to appear of court on Sept. 5, 2024.
Brian Guertin, 64, of Smithville was arrested for DUI on Aug. 21, 2024.
Authorities say that an officer conducted a traffic stop on a possible DUI. As the officer was speaking with the driver, Guertin, he noticed a strong odor of alcohol. Guertin allegedly said he had just consumed a couple of alcoholic beverages. He was given and performed poorly on field sobriety task. He was placed in custody. His bond was set at $2,500, and he is to appear of court on Sept. 5, 2024.
Andrew Bond, 44, of McMinnville was arrested for disorderly conduct and assault on a first responder on Aug. 23, 2024.
Chief Collins said that officers responded to St. Thomas DeKalb Hospital in reference to assist with a crisis patient. Upon arrival, officers found Bond acting violent and hostile to the staff. Officers attempted to talk to Bond where he made several attempts to assault officers. He was placed into custody. His bond was set to $10,000, and he is to appear in court on Sept. 12, 2024.
Marty Talent, 58, of Smithville was arrested for criminal trespass and indecent exposure on Aug. 27, 2024.
Authorities say that officers responded to a business in reference to an unwanted person who had previously been trespassed from the property. When officers made contact, Talent, allegedly exposed himself in the view of the public. He was placed in custody. His bond was set to $5,000, and he is to appear in court Sept. 12, 2024.
Nathaniel Tippens, 32, of New Market was arrested for aggravated assault on Aug. 28, 2024.
Officers responded to Wade Street in reference to an assault. Upon arrival, officers made contact with three victims that claimed Tippins had been following and harassing them. They also stated that he tried to hit them with his vehicle and they had to move to avoid being struck by the vehicle.
The victims left, and Tippens allegedly followed them and started shooting a pellet, or airsoft gun. One person was hit causing minor injuries, as well as one going through the vehicle window. Tippens was gone upon arrival, but was taken into custody the next day. His bond was set to $10,000, and he is to appear in court on Aug. 29, 2024.
Edward James, 68, of Liberty was arrested for DUI on Aug. 31, 2024. He was also cited for driving on roadways laned for travel.
Also, on Aug. 31, 2024 43-year-old William Tarpley, of Gordonsville, was arrested for public intoxication.
Offers responded to St. Thomas DeKalb Hospital in reference to a suspicious male that was attempting to get in to vehicles. Upon arrival, officer made contact with the male, identified as Tarpley. Officers noticed his speech was slurred, and he was unsteady on his feet. They discovered Tarpley had been seen at the ER, but had been discharged. They found no vehicles that appeared to have been broken into. He was placed into custody. His bond was set at $1,500, and he is to appear in court Sept. 19, 2024.
