Stop hitting our bridge!

It’s that time of year again. Time for tourist to make their way to the Smithville Jamboree, or to visit Center Hill Lake. It’s time for fun in the sun, and also for someone to plough into the College Street Bridge.

Once again, an oversized load failed to yield to warning signs that clearly mark the bridge’s height. According to Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper Bobby Johnson, 61-year-old Wendell Clutter of Crawford was traveling east on Broad Street on Tuesday, June 20, in a 2007 Freightliner, pulling a trailer loaded with an empty mobile storage container. As the vehicle traveled under the bridge the top of the container struck the bottom of the bridge, knocking the container off of the trailer and onto the roadway.

Clutter was driving for MMT Incorporated of Cookeville, traveling from Nashville to Walling at the time of the accident. He was not injured, but was cited for his load being over height limits. TDOT employees came to the scene to inspect the bridge for damage.

The bridge underwent repairs several years ago after a truck driver from the county landfill struck the bridge in 2016. Since then, the bridge has been impacted by several various vehicles, including tractor trailers, a vehicle hauling a farm tractor, car haulers and other vehicles.
