Tragedy struck the small town of Liberty last week, after a day of summer fun turned tragic for a local family.

On Wednesday, July 21, at 5:34 p.m. E-911 Central Dispatch received a call about a possible drowning on Smith Fork Creek in Liberty. The caller reported a female victim, located under the Highway 70 bridge the crosses the creek.

Deputies with the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department, and a unit with DeKalb EMS responded to the scene. Smithville/DeKalb rescue squad was also called to the scene to assist in getting the body out of the swimming area and up to the roadway.

Authorities say that the female, later identified as 31-year-old Porsche Lynn Cantrell of Cedar Street Liberty, and two other people, were swimming in the creek under the bridge when the incident occurred.

The body was sent to the State Medical Examiner‘s office for an autopsy. Members of the DeKalb County Medical Examiners were also on the scene.
