Texas man charged for "liking" victim

Can you go to jail for liking somebody? The answer is “yes” if your name is John Gabriel Perez and you are under a restraining order not to contact the victim in any form or fashion.

The 42-year-old Runge, Texas man is facing three counts of violating an order of protection, all for online incidents, one involving the mere “liking” of a post place on Facebook by the victim in the case.

According to Sheriff Patrick Ray, the “liking” of two posts made by the victim, a woman in this case, was the final straw as she maintained she had been contacted online in one way or another by Perez over the past couple of months. In cases of restraining orders, the restrained person must not only stay away from the victim but they are also banned from contacting them through phone, mail, internet or third parties.

The woman said the contact began with an online message on Feb. 20 followed by an email. The contact continued into March when she received a YouTube video from Perez in which he is reportedly using foul language toward her. The contact concluded with the pair of Facebook likes. And, since once something is posted to the internet, it is always there, the victim has preserved proof of the illegal contact.
