The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department made several arrests last week, including three people after a search warrant was executed at a local home.

Sheriff Patrick Ray said that on September 7, a Sherriff’s Department detective, along with other members of the Sheriff’s Department, executed a search warrant at 200 The Loop Circle in Smithville.

During the search, 23 white pills, believed to be gabapentin, were discovered as well as a small amount of a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana, numerous baggies, baggies with a crystal-like substance residue and powder, scales, pipes, syringes and other drug paraphernalia.

There, 20-year-old Ja’merrin Jameze Turner of Spring Hill Circle, Lebanon, 27-year-old Zachary Jacob Poss of The Loop Circle, Smithville, and 25-year-old Courtney Brooke Shrum of The Loop Circle, Smithville, were arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance sale manufacture or deliver. Each are under a $10,000 bond and are set to appear in court on September 21.

In other sheriff’s news, on September 1, 21-year-old Jordan Lee Golden of Old West Point Road, was arrested for criminal simulation and theft of property. He is under a $8,500 bond and he is due in court on September 12.

Sheriff Ray alleged that on August 7, Golden took a Glock Model 22, .40 caliber handgun, valued at $700 from a home on Old West Point Road in DeKalb County. Authorities say that Golden passed seven counterfeit $100 bills to the owner to pay for the gun.

On September 2, 34-year-old Jonathan Paul Bynum of Smithville Highway, Silver Point, was charged with vandalism, aggravated burglary, and theft of property. He is under a $20,000 bond and he is due in court on September 21.

On August 30, Bynum allegedly entered a home by forcing open the back door causing damage to the doorframe. Once inside, authorities say he took a purse from a lady and left the residence. He also allegedly damaged a 2007 SAAB convertible by busting the windshield and breaking the gearshift, as well as backing the vehicle into a tree.

The following day, 56-year-old Buddy Gene Williams of Academy Avenue, Alexandria, was charged with violation of an order of protection. He is under a $5,000 bond and he was in court on September 3.

On August 31, authorities claim that Williams knowingly violated an order of protection by contacting the workplace of the protected party.

On September 4, 38-year-old Mark Emory Johnson of South College Street, Smithville, was arrested for burglary and theft of property. He is under $1,500 bond and is due in court on September 14.

Sheriff Ray alleges that Johnson entered an outbuilding on Page Drive and took a welder without the owner’s consent. The welder was valued at $243.

On September 7, 44-year-old Ricky Allen Ashford II of East Main Street, Liberty, was charged with driving on a suspended license. He is under a $1,500 bond and he is due in court on September 21.

A deputy observed Ashford driving on Midway Road. The deputy had prior knowledge that Ashford’s license had been suspended and performing a traffic stop, a check through dispatch it was confirmed.

Ashford had been cited only the day before by the Smithville Police Department for driving on a suspended license.

On September 9, 41-year-old Jennifer Kaylene Carter of Wolf Creek Road, was arrested for DUI 1st offense and violation of the implied consent law, She is under a $3,500 bond and is due in court on September 28.

A deputy responded to Cookeville Highway on a report of a reckless driver. Upon arrival, the deputy made contact with a white Toyota Tacoma failing to maintain its lane of travel.

After a traffic stop, the deputy made contact with the driver, Carter, who allegedly had slurred speech, watery eyes, and had an alcohol odor coming from the vehicle. Carter reportedly performed poorly of field sobriety tasks and she was placed in custody.  She also refused to give a blood sample for chemical testing.

On September 10, 54-year-old Shawn Christian Barr of Calhoun Street, Smithville, was charged with theft of property. He is under an $8,000 bond and he is set to appear in court on September 28.

On July 6, 2023, Barr allegedly went to Toad Road and took a 16-foot Dovetail trailer, valued at $4,000, without the consent of the owner.
