Students at Northside School are learning how to soar, administrators at the school trying to teach them life lessons they can take with them long after the graduate from elementary school.

“We want to teach our students to soar,” said Principal Karen Knowles who led an assembly Friday to introduce new students to the idea and to refreshing returning students. “Soar stands for Safety, On-time, Accountability and Respect. Put them together, they are S.O.A.R.

Knowles gave out Eagle Bucks to one well-behaved student during the assembly, pointing out there are more from that come from and they will give out to those who live up to SOAR. The bucks can be used to purchase all kinds of things at the school store.

Speaking before a packed gym, Knowles reminded students she will be watching to see he demonstrates the ideals of SOAR, waiting to reward them for their actions. She noted the SOAR idea constitutes several areas.

“We talk about safety within the building and make sure we are focus on being on time,” said Principal Karen Knowles of the assembly held Friday at Northside. “That’s not just on time to school, but that’s on time to everywhere like the cafeteria. That might mean they eat instead of socializing because they run out of time for eating if they socialize too long.”

Knowles added that making good decisions is a big part of SOAR.

“It also means being accountable for your actions and being respectful to everyone,” she said, completing what SOAR stands for at the school. “Together we soar.”
