Traffic Stop Leads to Meth Charges

The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department made several arrests last week including a couple of men on meth charges. Authorities say that a simple traffic stop led to the arrests.

According to Sheriff Patrick Ray, 56-year-old Howard Robert Mayo Jr. of Gassaway Main Street, Liberty, was arrested on March 19 and charged with unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, driving on a revoked license second offense, and methamphetamine manufacture deliver sell or possess. He is under an $84,000 bond and he will be in court on April 6.

A deputy conducted a traffic stop on a Ford F-150 and made contact with the driver, Mayo. While speaking with Mayo, the man advised that there was a .22 rifle in the vehicle and later advised that he was a felon. A loaded Savage .22 caliber long rifle was located in the rear passenger compartment of the truck. After a criminal history check through Central Dispatch, it was confirmed that Mayo was a convicted felon for sale and delivery of a schedule III drug.

Mayo also allegedly admitted to deputies that he had meth inside of his wallet in the vehicle. The deputy located 2.10 grams of a white crystal-like substance believed to be meth. A check with dispatch also revealed a previous conviction for driving on a revoked license in April 2018.

The deputy also made contact with a passenger in the vehicle, 37-year-old Eric James Cox of Oakley Road, Liberty. Cox was charged with methamphetamine manufacture deliver sell or possess. He is under a $50,000 bond and he will be in court on April 6.

When asked if Cox had anything illegal on him, he allegedly pulled from his wallet a clear baggy containing .89 grams of a white crystal-like substance believed to be meth. 

On March 18, 23-year-old Alexander Paul Spore of Highway 31 East Lane, Bethpage, TN, was charged with driving under the influence first offense. He is under a $2,500 bond and will appear in court on April 6.

A deputy made contact with a vehicle headed westbound on Nashville Highway that failed to maintain its lane of travel several times.

After conducting a traffic stop, the deputy made contact with the driver, Spore, who allegedly had red glassy eyes, was unsteady on his feet, had slurred speech, and had a strong odor of alcohol coming from his person. Spore submitted to field sobriety tests, of which authorities say he performed poorly.

That same day, 46-year-old Tony Ray Bain of Short Mountain Road, McMinnville, was arrested for driving on a revoked drivers’ license third offense.

On March 3, a deputy conducted a traffic stop on a BMW for expired registration. The deputy made contact with Bain and found that his driver’s license had been revoked. Authorities say that the man had two prior convictions for driving on a revoked license on November 13, 2015.
