Two Charged with Growing Marijuana

The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department was busy last week, arresting several people including two people who were arrested on sealed indictments last week, handed down from the last session of the DeKalb County Grand Jury.

According to DeKalb County Sheriff Patrick Ray, 60-year-old Steven James Cantrell of Barnes Mill Road, Smithville, and a neighbor, 71-year-old Larry Adcock also of Barnes Mill Road, Smithville, were both arrested on July 25 on separate charges stemming from marijuana growing in the area. Each are charged with possession of a schedule VI drug marijuana manufacture, deliver, sell or possess. Each man is under a $3,500 bond and were in court on August 1.

On June 9, 2022, the Governor’s Task Force on Marijuana Eradication used a helicopter to locate marijuana growing operations in the area, and linked both men to the operation.

In other sheriff’s news, 38-year-old Tabatha Marie Batey of Vinewood Road, McMinnville, was written a citation on July 26, for possession of drugs without a prescription and possession of a schedule VI drug marijuana.

On July 25, during a consensual vehicle search, Batey was found to be in possession of two white pills believed to be Gabapentin without a prescription. She was also found to be in possession of .29 ounces of a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana. She is due to appear in court on August 18.

That same day, 43-year-old Scotty Wayne Knowles of Jacobs Pillar Road, Smithville, was arrested for possession of a schedule I drug heroin. He is under a $2,500 bond and he is due in court on August 18.

Sheriff Ray said that a deputy checked on a possible stranded motorist on Cookeville Highway and upon making contact with Knowles, authorities say he appeared nervous. After a driver’s license check, it was returned that he had a revoked license. While speaking with the man, he stated that he was also on probation.

After giving consent to search, Knowles was found to be in possession of .24 grams of a pink, powdery substance, believed to be heroin.

On July 26, 64-year-old Julienne Leigh Daniel of Captain’s Point Road, Silver Point, was arrested for DUI second offense. She is under a $10,000 bond and she is set to appear in court on August 11.

A deputy was dispatched to the area of Captain’s Point Road on a call concerning a possible intoxicated female parked in the roadway. Upon arrival, the deputy made contact with Daniel, sitting in the driver’s seat of her white Honda, blocking the roadway. The deputy reported that the woman had a strong odor of alcohol on her person, and after asking her to step out of the vehicle, she was also unsteady on her feet.

Daniel was asked to complete field sobriety tasks, which officials say she was unable to complete safely. The deputy also reported finding three vodka bottles in the floorboard of the vehicle. When asked how much she had had to drink, the deputy reported Daniel as saying, “Too much.”

Daniel’s first DUI offense was only four days earlier, on July 22, 2022, and her bond was doubled from $5,000 to $10,000 in the second case.

On July 30, 53-year-old Curtis Lee Adams of Midway Road, Smithville, was charged with domestic assault. He is under a $3,500 bond and is due in court on August 18.

Authorities allege that Adams got into a verbal argument with a female, which turned physical. He allegedly took the woman’s phone and grabbed her arms, causing bruising and scratches to her left arm. The victim also reported that he hit her in the forehead.

On August 1, 40-year-old Anthony Charles Skaroupka of South College Street, Smithville, was arrested for public intoxication. He is under a $1,500 bond and is due in court on August 18.

A deputy was patrolling Short Mountain Highway when he made contact with two males riding bikes down the road. While speaking with Skaroupka, authorities say he was unsteady on his feet and had slurred speech. He reportedly stated that he had taken some prescription medication and had smoked marijuana earlier in the night. For his safety and the safety of others he was placed in custody.
