There were some scary moments for a few travelers on Highway 56 South last week after a crash led to one vehicle flipping and coming to rest on its side. Two people received cuts and bruises in the crash.
According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, on Tuesday afternoon, September 14, 77 year old Melva Patton of Smithville was traveling south on Highway 56, near the DeKalb/Warren County line, in a 2015 Toyota Rav4. At the same time 64 year old George Nixon, and a passenger 64 year old Joyce Nixon, were traveling north in a 2000 GMC Sierra.
Authorities say that as Patton’s Rav4 attempted to turn onto R. Arnold Road, she pulled into the path of Nixon. The Sierra hit the Rav4, ran off the right side of the roadway, then hit a ditch before overturning several times.
THP, deputies with the DeKalb Sheriff’s Department, the DeKalb Fire Department, and DeKalb EMS responded to the scene.
Mr. and Mrs. Nixon received several cuts in the crash and bystanders had to smash the truck’s windshield in order for the couple to get out of the vehicle. They were treated by DeKalb EMS and transported to the hospital. Patton was uninjured.
All three people were reportedly wearing their seatbelts at the time of the accident. Patton was charged with failure to yield.
