The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department made several arrests last week including a wanted fugitive, and several violent offenders.
Sheriff Patrick Ray said that on June 12, 25-year-old Ethan Joe Kelly Sargent of Hollow Springs Road, Woodbury, was arrested for criminal impersonation and theft of property over $10,000. He is under a $40,000 bond and he appeared in court on June 22,
Sheriff Ray reported that on March 26, 2023, a deputy conducted a traffic stop on a black GMC Yukon on Nashville Highway, just past DeKalb Market. The passenger of the vehicle was asked for identification, which he was unable to provide. He told the deputy that his name was Ethan Smith with a date of birth of October 1, 2008.
After further investigation, it was found that the subject’s name was actually Ethan Joe Kelly Sargent with a date of birth of October 1, 1997. Due to the passenger assuming a false identity, he was charged with criminal impersonation.
He was also charged with theft charges, with authorities alleging that on March 7, 2023, that Sargent went to a residence on Midway Road and made away with a 2002 Harley-Davidson soft tail motorcycle, valued at $15,000. Sargent was allegedly seen on video surveillance on the motorcycle at Fiddlers’ Market on Sparta Highway in DeKalb County.
On June 20, 55-year-old Lisa Taylor Chancy of Sparta Highway, Smithville, was arrested for domestic assault. She is under a $10,000 bond and is due to appear in court on July 6.
Sheriff Ray said that on June 19, deputies responded to Sparta Highway for a domestic call. Upon arrival a deputy made contact with a male who advised that he and his wife, Lisa, had been in a verbal argument when it turned physical. The man reported that Chancy picked up a full beer can and hit him on top of his head. She then allegedly scratched the man and attempted to poke him in the eyes. Deputies reported that the man did have scratch marks and that his clothes were wet from the beer.
On June 22, 26-year-old Isiah Curtis Sutherland of Cainsville Road, Lebanon, was arrested on a fugitive from justice warrant. He is under a $50,000 bond and he is due in court on June 27.
Sutherland was found to be a wanted person out of the state of Wisconsin. A DeKalb Correctional officer contacted Marathon County, WI, to confirm extradition. Sutherland is wanted for failure to appear on burglary and criminal damage to property charges. Marathon County notified DeKalb that they would extradite.
That same day, 28-year-old Andrew Mason Williams of Sunny Point Road, Baxter, was charged with assault on a first responder and resist, stop, halt, frisk or arrest. He is under an $11,000 bond and he is due in court on July 13.
According to Sheriff Ray, deputies responded to Sunny Point Road for a wanted person. They spoke with a person at the scene, who advised that two dogs at the residence were aggressive and would bite on command.
One of the deputies knocked on the door and Williams came outside. When the deputy advised him that he had an active warrant out of Wilson County, Williams turned to run back inside, attempting to resist arrest. He stated that his dogs would bite the deputies if they came inside, but law enforcement was able to pull him outside and tase him before placing him in custody.
Also on June 22, 20-year-old Cobe Keelan Ray Cantrell, who is reported as homeless, was arrested for aggravated assault and possession of drug paraphernalia. He is under an $11,500 bond and he is set to appear in court on July 6.
Deputies went to West Main Street in Smithville to serve an active warrant on Cantrell. While one deputy was knocking on the front door, another deputy was on the opposite side of the home watching other exits.
Authorities say that Cantrell was then seen exiting a basement exterior door. The deputy could not see Cantrell’s hands, so he was given verbal commands to show his hands while the deputy drew his Taser. As the deputy drew closer, Cantrell was allegedly seen partially holding a handgun. Cantrell was then commanded to put his hands in the air and on top of his head, as the deputy transitioned to his service weapon.
Cantrell complied and a deputy retrieved the weapon from Cantrell’s right front pocket. The gun was reported as a .38 special revolver with no serial number or model from being altered. A search revealed a homemade pipe with a crystal-like substance used for illegal narcotics.
On June 24, 46-year-old Scott Cory Harris of Possum Hollow Road, Dowelltown, was arrested for aggravated assault and assault. He is under a $15,000 bond and is due in court on July 13.
A deputy responded to an address on Old Snow Hill Road on a report of a disturbance. Upon arrival, the deputy made contact with two subjects who advised that Harris had grabbed one of them around the neck in an attempt to strangle him. During the altercation, Harris allegedly told both subjects that he was going to kill them. Both victims wrote statements about the incident.
