An Antioch, TN, woman was killed last weekend after being involved in a horrific motorcycle crash on Center Hill Dam. The rescue efforts involved people from both the ground and water.
According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, on Saturday, at around 4:26 p.m., 28-year-old Brooke Murphy was traveling south on Highway 96 (Dale Ridge Road) at the bridge over Center Hill Dam on a S1000 BMW motorcycle. At the same time, 41-year-old Tom Baird was traveling north in a GMC pickup truck.
Authorities say that as the motorcycle attempted to negotiate the sharp curve at the north side of the dam, the motorcycle crossed the center line and struck the truck. Afterwards, the motorcycle veered into the concrete guardrail, where Murphy was propelled over the handlebars and off the side of the bridge, plunging 60 to 70 feet below.
E-911 dispatchers were notified, and deputies with the DeKalb Sheriff’s Department, the DeKalb Fire Department, DeKalb EMS, the Smithville-DeKalb County Rescue Squad, TWRA officers, and US Army Corps of Engineers Officials responded to the scene, along with THP Trooper Dylan Palmer.
Witnesses to crash say that it is not known if Murphy landed on the rocky shore first, but she eventually landed in the waters of Center Hill Lake. Two passersby rushed down the steep, rocky shoreline where they reached the woman, then flagged down a passing boat, who helped retrieve the woman from the water. Murphy was then rushed to the boat ramp at the south end of the dam, where she was met by DeKalb EMS. CPR was implemented on Murphy, but she was later declared dead at the scene.
No charges were issued in the accident.
