My son, Ralph, and June Vaughn told me about their recent trip to England and Wales. It was especially interesting for Ralph, since both sides of his family are Welsh. My maiden name is Cantrell, and according to Historian Tommy Webb, all the Cantrell families in DeKalb County have roots in Wales.
Mr. Webb said that Richard Cantrell, an Englishman, came to America in the 1600s and married Dorothy Jones, a native of Wales. Several generations later, the first Cantrell family showed up in DeKalb County.
Ralph's ancestors on the Vaughn side came to America from Wales. June's maiden name is Williams; also a popular name in Wales. Ralph and June said that Wales is small with mountains, rolling hills, beautiful farms and even nice beaches since Wales is an island country.
One day, they stopped in a small Welsh town. Ralph spotted a business with a sign that read ‘David Vaughan & Associates.’ June made his picture in front of the building. He then went inside and introduced himself as a cousin from America.
David probably thought it a little strange having someone that he had never seen before walk in like that. Ralph and June said their trip was one that they'll never forget.
