Project Graduation Haunted House Oct. 26-28
There will be a Haunted House on Oct. 26-28 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at 3395 Midway Road, Smithville. There is a $5 admission with children under four free. Activities include games, face painting, movies and a bonfire with marshmallow roasting. There will be concessions with hot dogs, chips, popcorn, cotton candy, cupcakes, hot cider, hot chocolate and drinks. All proceeds benefit Project Graduation.
Habitat for Humanity Chili Cook-Off and Bake Sale Oct. 27
There will be a Chili Cook-Off benefiting Habitat for Humanity of DeKalb County Friday, Oct. 27, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the DeKalb County Courthouse Lawn. Rain location is the DeKalb County Complex. You be the judge, make a donation and eat all the chili you want from all the teams and vote for your favorite. DeKalb County Democratic Party PotLuck Oct. 26 at DCHS
The DeKalb County Democratic Party will host a potluck dinner on Thursday, Oct. 26, at 6 p.m. at the DeKalb County High School. Speakers will include State Representative John Ray Clemmons of Nashville and candidate for State Senate 17th District Mary Alice Carfi. Music for the evening provided by Jake Hoot. First United Methodist Church Homemade Lunch, Craft and Bake Sale Nov. 3
There will be a homemade lunch, craft and bake sale by First United Methodist Church from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3, at their Christian Fellowship Center located at 102 West Church Street, Smithville. Lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and carry outs are available. Bake sale will offer delicious pies, cakes, cookies, candies, etc. Crafts will offer those gifts you’ve been looking for and lunch will let you rest and enjoy a variety of homemade soups, sandwiches and desserts. All proceeds go to organizations in DeKalb County that serve the needs of others during the year and at Christmas.

Turkey Trot to be held Nov. 11
DeKalb County Coordinated School Health will be holding the second annual Turkey Trot Walkathon on Saturday, Nov. 11, at Green Brook Park to benefit the Back Pack Program. All ages are welcome. There will be prizes given in each age category. We will have games, food, crafts, and face painting. Registration starts at 10 a.m. The walkathon will start at 11 a.m. and end at 12:30 p.m., with prizes to follow. We ask that participants bring non-perishable food items for a donation to the Back Pack Program.
VOLUNTEER TENNESSEE MEETS
Volunteer Tennessee will hold its quarterly business meeting on Friday, October 20, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. EDT at the University Center in Chattanooga. The agenda for the meeting will include committee meetings; approval of revisions to the Volunteer Tennessee 2016-18 State Plan; approval of the Volunteer Tennessee 2018 Support Grant budget; decisions on 2018 Volunteer Center and Youth Civic Engagement grant funding; and election of 2018 officers.
Volunteer Tennessee is a 25-member bipartisan board appointed by the governor to encourage volunteerism and community service. Volunteer Tennessee pursues its mission through administration of AmeriCorps and Volunteer Generation Fund grants, training and collaborations and coalitions with public and private organizations interested in volunteerism and service.

Bring on the Lights
Center Hill Lake Light Fest is back this year and hoping to be bigger and better than last year, but we need your help! Over 800 people drove through the holiday tour of lights at the Retreat at Center Hill Lake in 2016. Lighted decorations adorned all of our buildings and dozens of trees, there were hidden elves to be found, a giant Santa and of course, free hot chocolate for everyone! Please join us this year in creating a wonderland of lights for our community and visitors alike to experience and get in the holiday spirit.
Center Hill Lake Light Fest is scheduled to run Thursdays through Sundays, Nov. 30 to Dec. 23, 5pm-9pm. Get your office, church, club or group of friends together and sign up to decorate a cabin! We are also looking for participants to perform a live nativity and carolers. There are many ways to participate! We are asking groups to commit by October 20th. Caring Hearts United Christmas at Three Star Mall
Caring Hearts United, a non-profit organization which assists hospice units in Warren and surrounding counties, will be hosting their annual fundraiser, Wonderland of Trees, Nov. 11- Nov. 18, 2017 at Three Star Mall in McMinnville.
Fully decorated Christmas trees and wreaths are donated by area businesses and individuals for a silent auction. The third-annual Handbags for Hope is to benefit Genesis House, Inc. of the Upper Cumberland. All proceeds benefit domestic violence prevention and awareness in the Upper Cumberland. DeKalb Animal Coalition
The DeKalb Animal Coalition meets monthly on the first Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the former Senior Citizens room on the second floor of city hall. Everyone is welcome to learn about plans for a facility which will house and treat lost or stray animals to be returned to their owner or available for adoption.
Smithville Head Start Center
L.B.J. & C. Head Start is currently accepting applications to provide free comprehensive child development services to children three-five years of age from low-income families in a full-day program. Services are also offered to meet the special needs of children with disabilities. L.B.J. & C. Head Start helps all children succeed. L.B.J. & C. Head Start provides children with activities that help them grow mentally, socially, emotionally, and physically.
The L.B.J. & C. Head Start recognizes that, as parents, you are the first and most important teachers of your children. They will welcome your involvement in L.B.J. & C. DeKalb County Canning College Course
The course is $25, which covers food and supplies. The same course is offered during day and night to accommodate participants’ schedules. Payment is due at least three days prior to class. The class will be held at the UT Extension Office, 722 South Congress Boulevard, Smithville. A minimum of four students are needed to make each class. Classes will be held in the kitchen at DeKalb County Complex.
