Oh, if we only would stop and think what we are saying.
No, those three little words aren’t ‘I love you’ although you could say they are connected. I’m talking about how we use ‘Oh, my God’.
There was a time, which seems not so long ago in my mind, you rarely heard this expletive phrase. It was just something you did not say. However, I hear it everywhere, and I cringe. You may think I’m making too much over this, but I truly feel when we use the words, we are taking God’s name in vain. Think about this: in the dictionary, the meaning for vain is ‘producing no result; useless’. When we say ‘Oh my God’ in an expletive way or out of fear or surprise, the name of God is being useless. We are not saying it as in a prayer, but as a by-word for human emotion.
For I proclaim the name of the Lord: ascribe greatness to our God. He is the rock, His work is perfect; for all His ways are justice, a God of truth and without injustice; righteous and upright is He.
