A new school year is beginning. Education is the topic of most meetings. Yes, we know that in the past few years there have been changes. Have we forgotten our two teacher county schools?
This article is to remind us that DeKalb County has always had good principals and teachers who taught in the little country schools. In this picture of the Pea Ridge two-teacher school, at the top right of this page, you will not only see an outstanding Principal, Mr. W.W. Frazier, but lower grade teachers who would push up their sleeves and tackle any job that needed to be done, and yes this school produced many young men and women who could go on to higher education and become physiatrists, mathematicians, and teachers.
The State Board asked Mr. Frazier if his school would put on a program for them to see and maybe get an award. When he told Mrs. Carter and the pupils they were eager to plan a program.
The date was set, and Pea Ridge School was busy putting together an interesting program.
The State Board talked it over, and without a doubt, liked what they saw. They gave the school a prestigious award. That day they awarded Pea Ridge School the best two-teacher school in the State of Tennessee.
Parents, students, and teachers were delighted.
Most of the retired teachers once taught in a two-teacher or maybe one-teacher school. We know the impact that they made on education. They truly filled the needs in education at that time.
If you are still living and helped put the program on at Pea Ridge School, please call 615-536-5286. We would like to hear from you.
