Sunday morning, Oct. 23, the sun was shinning brightly, and the weather was not too cool with a slight breeze in the Dry Creek Valley.
The members of the Dry Creek Baptist were looking forward to this day. Cooks had been in the kitchen over the weekend preparing their best dishes for a big Sunday dinner for invited guests and for the church family.
This was “Pastor Appreciation Day” to recognize and honor our pastor, the Rev. Donald Owens and his wife, Mrs. Audrey, who have served Dry Creek Baptist Church since 2001.
His leadership and dedication to help this “little church” become larger is amazing and he continues to promote Christian beliefs that have always been its mission since 1889.
This little church just happened to be Bro. Donald’s home church where he grew up and was ordained into God’s ministry at the young age of 14.
He served his first church at the age of 18. For over 60 years, Bro. Donald Owens has served so faithfully, accomplished many projects and is always looking to the future for greater things that needs to be done as pastor of the church.
He recognizes every member and strives to meet their needs. He is a mission-minded pastor. He not only believes in Christ’s great commission, he promotes the special mission offering every year as well.
The Dry Creek Baptist Woman’s Missionary Society honored him by presenting him with a plaque. Louise Frazier did the presentation and Kathy Hendrix read the inscription.
Jimmy Kimbrell presented Bro. Donald with a monetary gift and a nice gift was given to Mrs. Audrey.
The church prepared a delicious dinner and served it at the noon hour.
There were many friends present from McMinnville, Lebanon, Smithville and Liberty who had food and fellowship with the Owens. They recalled the days that Bro. Donald Owens served as their pastor and met their needs; whether it was a wedding, death, sickness, trip to the hospital, phone call or just a visit, he was there.
Mr. and Mrs.Larry Yoder were hosts to an “Old Timer’s Dinner” at their home Saturday evening.
Those attending were Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Womack, Mr. and Mrs. Mike Foster, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Frazier, Mr. Edsel Frazier and Mr. Kenny Edge.
Mrs. Judy Kimbrell visited her daughter, Mrs. Monica Reynolds at her home in Alexandria, Monday.
Mrs. Lisa Cripps and Mrs. Louise Frazier attended the Beta Theta Delta Kappa Gamma meeting at Elizabeth Chapel Church, Tuesday. Mrs. Jenelle Pugh attended also. The Smithville members served as hostesses for the meeting.
Relatives of Mr. Ben Franklin from Florida have been visiting Ben and Linda this week and attended Dry Creek Baptist Church Sunday.
Mrs. Marlene Prichard and her mother, Mrs. Scott, of Alexandria, visited Mrs. Louise Frazier Wednesday afternoon.
Mrs. Louise Frazier was at Love Cantrell Funeral Home Thursday to be with friends and family of Mr. Sam Love. Sam was in the DCHS Class of 1936. the class had 21 boys and girls. Sam and Louise were the last ones living.
We don’t know about Otis Winnard. If any of our readers know about Otis, please let us know.
Sam was a good student and a wonderful classmate. He played football and he loved the game.
The smile he wore on his face daily lets us know that he was a happy person.
He married the love of his life Allie Rhea Foster. She too was a member of the class of 1936. She preceded him in death several years ago. What a privilege to have known Sam Love.
Two busloads from Elizabeth Chapel Baptist Church went to Lynchburg Thursday and enjoyed a delicious dinner at Miss Mary Bobo’s Restaurant.
It is no longer a boarding house. This restaurant is a stately establishment, listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Today, Lynne Tolley, the great-grandniece of Mr. Jack Daniels, continues Miss Mary’s long tradition of southern hospitality, where you can enjoy a real home-cooked meal offering heaping bowls of delicious food to her guests.
Thanks to Pastor Bill Robertson and Elizabeth Chapel Church for this nice trip.
Mary Snow and Louise K. Frazier were invited guests. Twenty-four people enjoyed this trip.
