On the morning of April 1 the sun was shining brightly in the valley, but there was still a cool breeze. There were no April Fool’s pranks played here.
Let Jerry Parker tell you about his love for the Dry Creek Valley. Well, Jerry was in Chicago with no Smithville Review close by, took time busy as he was to pull up on the internet this column, “Dry Creek Flashes,” and read the news from the valley.
Yes, we understand how much he loves the valley. He has so many ties to here. His mother, the late Bertha Fuston, was born and reared here and his father’s father lived in the Vandergriff Hollow. He truly loves the land and the people. We love it too.
We just look out the glass door and enjoy the red-headed woodpecker, which looks like it would measure 12 to 15 inches in length. It is huge going up and down the barren pear tree. He gets a sunflower seed from the bird-feeder then back to the pear tree to digest it.
This is “mother nature” at its best. Another small woodpecker is seen nearby. This one is only a few inches long, four to five maybe, with just one dot of red on his head and black and white feathers. It is so cute and interesting to watch.
We love the deep-red male cardinals, the “red-feathered” male purple finches and the Eastern bluebirds.
A busy woman this morning is Georgia Hawker, out delivering angel-food cakes to the sick and shut-ins and maybe some of her favorite people. Mine is still warm from the oven. Thanks to Georgia.
