Tennessee is a wonderful state in which we live Tennessee, is called a southern state and has the nickname of “The Volunteer State” because the state supplied over twice as many volunteers in the war of 1812 and in the Mexican War as the government had asked the state to send. World Book Volume T says that Tennessee comes from an indian word of unknown meaning.
We honor the Tennessee flag that has the three white stars in a circle of blue background representing the three divisions.
The state bird is the mocking bird. The iris is the state flower. The state tree is the tulip popular..Does Tennessee have a wild flower? We think so The blue book  sent from the state to all public school libraries in Tennessee has the passion flower listed as the wild flower of Tennessee. What is the passion flower? Webster dictionary defines it as a flower of various colors with  a yellow egg like fruit. It is called the passion flower because parts of the flower are supposed to resemble Jesus wounds, crown of thorns, etc.
The World Book, Volume P, defines it as any one of a group whose flower parts seem to represent Christ’s crucifixion. Early roman catholic missionaries named these plants. They thought the ten colored filaments form a showy crown, which represents the crown of thorns. The five pollen bearing anthers suggested the wounds of Christ. The division of the pistil were the nails used to put Christ on the cross. The blade-like leaf was symbolic of his pierced side. Whips and cords were the coiling tendrils.
One would need to see this beautiful flower to understand its description. It grows in Tennessee. The last passion flower that we saw was in Cades Cove. It was growing on the garden fence of the old plantation house in Cades Cove. We have just heard the good news that the pasion flowere is growing on a farm in the beautiful valley of dry creek. Visit the valley,  find the flower and admire its beauty. The color is purple.
The clematis flower, which can be bought at Lowe’s and other flower shops, is a perennial herb or woody vine of the crowfoot family with bright colored flowers. Purple is the color most of the plants have in this area. The passion flower and the clematis plants look alike. They are slow growing plants. We hope that this information is correct and will help readers to search for the things that will cause them to love the state they live in and appreciate the good life and its opportunities.
