God has taken a dear friend and relative--to many in the Dry Creek Valley--from her earthly home to her eternal home in Heaven. Charles “Chase” Davis of Dowelltown will be sadly missed in her hometown and by the many friends and relatives who knew her.
For years, she was the clerk in the Roy Malone Store in Dowelltown. She was also the well-known bus driver in the valley.
She could drive anywhere in all kinds of weather. In the Wilder Hollow, where the road was the creek, she was known to pick up the children who lived there when the water ran into the bus.
People could depend upon her for the safety of their children.
Chase, in her later years, did substitute teaching at the Dowelltown and Liberty Elementary Schools. After the consolidation, she worked at the DeKalb Co. West School. She always had a job and did a good job, wherever she worked.
At Liberty High School, she was an outstanding player on the girls’ basketball team. She loved sports.
Two of her favorite sports teams were the Braves and the U.T. Lady Vols Basketball team.
For years, she was almost totally blind. This was her first health problem. She was a devoted member of Dowelltown Baptist Church and attended every Sunday until her health prevented her from driving.
She was truly a community oriented person. She served her district in elections and did other volunteer services in her community.
For recreation, everyone knew that Chase liked to fish. Chase fished the lake, on Smith Fork, in the Dry Creek Stream, or to her, just anywhere there were fish to be caught. For years, she and the late Martha Cathcart were partners at the fishing hole.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Betty Elledge; grandmother, Alice Mitchell; brother, Joe Elledge and his wife; niece, Betty Joe; and her dear husband, Tom Davis.
Chase leaves a daughter, Kay Grumback and her husband, Ed; granddaughter, Erwin and her husband; grandson of Shiply, Va., Donnie Elledge, Clinton; and her sister, Maynell Walpold of Smithville.
Our community extends its deepest sympathy to this family. May they depend upon God’s love and mercy during the passing of their loved one.
Mr. Donnie Elledge and three daughters of Clinton were here for the funeral of Mrs. Charles Davis at DeKalb Funeral Chapel.
Ms. Davis Rowland of Lebanon, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Cripps of Hendersonville, Mrs. Aline Cripps of White House, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Jones and Mr. Mike Jones of Murfreesboro, Mr. Bobby Cripps of Nashville and Mr. Terry Cripps of McMinnville attended the funeral of Mrs. Charles Davis.
After the funeral, they visited Mrs. Jim Cripps, Dwight and Joe on Dry Creek.
Special get-well wishes go to Tootsie Young, the “Cake Lady,” of Smithville. She is recovering from a fall at her home. Everyone knows Tootsie for her delicious cakes that she bakes. Our prayers, love, and best wishes go out to this dear lady.
It was good to talk with retired teacher, Linda Fuston, Monday. She has health problems, which keep her at home, many days. Her friends in Dry Creek Valley send their love and best wishes to Linda.
We saw a dear lady, Betty Hale, Thursday. She told me that she enjoyed the Dry Creek Flashes. It is good to know that many people read the news, and also enjoy it. Keep reading, Betty. We read for information, relaxation, and for enjoyment.
Be glad that God gives us our eyesight to read. Everyone is not blessed with good eyesight.
Congratulations to Bobby Joines, who celebrated his birthday on Sept. 1. We all know and love Bobby. Love and best wishes go to Bobby and his wife, Mary.
Dr. Morris Ferguson of Lebanon was a special guest with Bro. W.L. Baker at Dry Creek Baptist Church at the evening worship service.
Special events at Dry Creek Baptist include the Senior Adults going to lunch with Bro. Donald Owens in Cookeville, on Sept. 8. They will leave the church at 10 a.m. On Sept. 11, the church will have their Golden State Mission Offering for Tenn. Missions. The goal is $1,400.
In Oct. there will be Harvest Festival, Jesse Haun, Hay Ride and Chili Supper to follow. In Nov., there will be a Thanksgiving supper.
Everyone is welcome to all services at Dry Creek Baptist Church. Bro. Donald Owens, pastor.
